Compulsory registration of live-in relationships is manifestly unconstitutional and is a battle to be fought in courts. Spending political energy on it however is stupid. It's a deliberate distraction that normalizes the rest of the Bill.

Citizenship is political before legal. For those of us lawyers who are fixated on the bar and bench, it is wise to revisit Hannah Arendt's characterization of it as a more preliminary pre-legal right to possess and enjoy the canonical rights.
Writing for Parichay, an NGO working on Indian citizenship, I offer a political (rather than doctrinal) critique of CAA and NRC. The title is inspired by Partha Chatterjee. But read on for a Lacanian twist. And there is some sprinkling of Varun Grover too.

For context: Tughlaq legislated that the monarch could be sued for any wrongful conduct of the state officials. But wily Aziz, who filed a false case, also realized that the idealism of the Muslim emperor to do justice would be better served if the claim is brought by a Hindu.
