We have written an agenda-setting essay on the importance of theory globally, and especially for Indian academia. Responding to a long-standing debate carried in the pages of EPW, we address the critical question: "why theory" @MoizTundawala (1/6)

Issued in public interest: In Indian universities, if you have a PhD, you are a "Dr" and if you don't have one, you are a "Professor". And if you are a woman, irrespective of your degree, you're a "Miss" with your first name.

As @MoizTundawala and I argued in 2019, the unsoundness of legal arguments in the Ayodhya judgement is not a fallacy of interpretation but a decisive approval of a new regime of sovereignty. Despite many opinions on the case, this piece remains original.

Citizenship is political before legal. For those of us lawyers who are fixated on the bar and bench, it is wise to revisit Hannah Arendt's characterization of it as a more preliminary pre-legal right to possess and enjoy the canonical rights.
