Excited to share a new preprint w/ Tessa Blanken, Han van der Maas, & @BorsboomDenny! We discuss the striking (implicit) assumption of path symmetry in current theories of psychopathology, which is misaligned with complex dynamical systems. Read more:

Latest suicide pub (w/ @drkatebentley @TaylorABurkePhD @jorsmo @DrJBStephens) provides strong evidence to 1) counter the common claim that clinicians can't predict suicide risk, demonstrating the value of clinical judgment, yet also 2) massive improvement through ML on SRA items
While clinicians can stratify suicide risk above chance levels, predictive accuracy for future suicide attempts significantly improves when using machine learning to incorporate comprehensive clinical assessment data. https://t.co/QvbBKljIa8

There’s a lot of glee in the comments to this post. The thing is, universities use this money to pay facilities, upkeep and admin to manage the grants. Cutting it to just 15% will decimate universities, especially medical schools. One can argue on where that $$ should come from..
Last year, $9B of the $35B that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) granted for research was used for administrative overhead, what is known as “indirect costs.” Today, NIH lowered the maximum indirect cost rate research institutions can charge the government to 15%, above
