“I ain’t forgot about you”: An exploration into how Black folks seek to maintain relationships and meet commitments despite limited resources and increased work demands.
Only about 4% of licensed psychologists are Black…
I just passed the
#EPPP
licensing exam, so the number just went up!!
I’m bout to be your newest Black licensed clinical psychologist 😃.

Idk who needs to hear this but quantitative methodologies are not “unbiased” or “objective”.
Everything from the measures you choose to include or NOT include, as well as the variables/constructs you control for (or choose to not pay attention to), expose your biases.
I’m thrilled to announce that after my next postdoc year, I’ll be joining the Clinical Psychology program in UMD College Park’s Psychology Dept. as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Fall ‘23.
Looking forward to returning to the DMV area & excited to launch my research lab..
If you’re not good at stats now, doesn’t mean you never will be.
Before my PhD program, despite 3 stat classes, I couldn’t tell you what a p value was, but with great mentorship & training, it began to click and I finished a whole concentration in quantitative psych.
Now that I’m recovering from shock and disbelief...
I’m excited to share that I was awarded the Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship, and I’ll be working with
@DrDesmondPatton
and Dr. Katherine Shear at Columbia University this Fall. Thank you to my mentors and community!!
My faculty profile is now live!
This is also a good time to share that I’ll be recruiting my first graduate student to start in Fall 2024 in the Clinical Psych PhD program @ UMD College Park. More info about my lab’s upcoming projects coming soon!
We did it Joe! I finished internship in the middle of a pandemic!
Dr. Henry is fully loaded ✅. Happy to announce that I’ve finished my clinical psychology internship at Montefiore Hosital/Albert Einstein College of Medicine specializing in child, family, and adult psychology.
I’m excited to share my new paper that explores how to culturally adapt mobile-mental health technologies for Black young adults! This was the core of my dissertation work so I’m happy to see it out in the world. Huge thanks to
@DrNeblett
for the support!
I’m happy to announce that I will be concluding my PhD training by delivering and honing my skills in culturally responsive, evidence-based therapies and research in underserved communities at Montefiore Hospital/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in NYC!
We’re all still adjusting to delivering mental healthcare via telehealth, especially to underserved ppl. Because of this, I’m happy to update y’all and say that thanks to
@HPRScholars
@RWJF
, my mHealth app for Black young adults is now moving into the next stage of development.
New paper alert! Our longitudinal study suggests that racial identity beliefs change in many ways during young adulthood, and that positive beliefs about being Black are associated with better mental health over 3 years!
I removed the “views my own” from my profile because if 1) it’s social media so that should be apparent and 2) if my views on Black lives and Black LGBTQIA+ people are “not PC” then we have a problem on sight. Period. 🏳️🌈.
There’s no feeling like finally cleaning and doing preliminary analyses of a dataset that’s taken soooo long to collect and seeing things come out as significant 😭

Hey yall! I’m Dr. Henry, a clinical psychologist & postdoc researcher & clinician. I focus on better understanding race-related factors’ influence on Black ppl’s mental health, and I help to develop mHealth to reduce health disparities.

1 of my first Howard memories is when my Black Lit professor, a Black man with several published books, told me I was a great writer.
As a low-income first-gen from Mississippi, it was the 1st time I felt like I belonged at college.
This is why black faculty and HBCUs matter.
While we’re focused on diversifying psychology, let’s also stop framing graduate school admission prep conferences/seminars/etc. as only for “outstanding” students or whatever words/criteria you use for students who are expected to have a high GPA, research experience, etc.
I remember days where I’m literally going from sitting in a class, to teaching my own class, to seeing clients/patients, and then settling in to do both homework and my own research activities. All in the same 24 hours.
Reviewing my first manuscript at this stage in my career and I realized….you can be critical without being mean. It’s really not that hard to be helpful/respectful while giving constructive feedback.

I have officially reached the age where my hobbies include window shopping on Zillow at night.
Here is live footage of me looking at homes I can’t afford:

Family: You about to be rich when you finish your PhD!
Me: ....um hm!
*me five minutes later in the corner after googling post doc and tenure track salaries*
…*whispers*…are we still using BIPOC or have we decided that we want to take more nuanced and explicit approaches to describing specific communities that are oppressed by racism without combining their collective but different experiences into one acronym?…asking for myself.
Unexpected adulting struggle no one teaches you how to do

Finding/establishing relationships with all new healthcare providers from medical to dentistry in a new city (don’t get me started on insurance).
I will be revealing my new lab’s name soon. After many votes, it took every fiber in my being to resist one of the best ideas (and second place in the popular vote) that it should be the TWERC Lab (Together We Eradicate Racism, Consciously).
(FYI it will be our lab’s AKA) so ™️
Our study has now been approved to recruit nationally! If you're between 18-25 and identify as Black/African American, you’re eligible! Everything is online, surveys can be done in less than 30 mins, and you can earn up to $45! Email uncstressandlife

New pub alert! Our newest article explored the impact of racial discrimination on the well-being of caregiver-child dyads, and if a mentalizing-focused parenting group would reduce the effects of racism-related and parenting stress!
My heart goes out to everyone who’s posted about
#BlackintheIvory
and through all the anger and grief, I’m maintaining the hope that I can play a role in dismantling the racism in academia and society and open doors for others just like my Black mentors have done for me.
I feel like doing a thread on the value of mentorship for Black folx in psychology across all levels (from advisors to peer mentors to undergrad/postbac mentees) but not sure if that’s been exhausted yet. 😅.
Being
#firstgen
means grappling with the anxiety of potentially declining a job offer...being from the South where jobs were a scarcity, I never heard of people turning down jobs because they weren’t a “good fit”, and my fam also doesn’t understand what that means 😭.
Shoutout to all of my fellow Black Americans who, like me, are just now about to eat.
My heart goes out to all of those that may still yet be waiting.
Our resilience on this day in the face of hunger is unmatched.
I’ve lived in my apartment for over four years and just now learned how to really use the dishwasher 😭😭.
To be fair, all I heard growing up was “We don’t need a dishwasher, YOU my dishwasher.”
Shoutout to Black moms.
Update: My mama just decided to bring her own groceries. This indeed counts for 2 of the 4 suitcases they brought for the trip 😭.
And yes, that ham traveled from Mississippi to NYC.
My parents are coming to NYC for Thanksgiving and I don’t know how to prepare them for the price difference of groceries between here and Mississippi 😭
I remember 1 of my first meetings with
@DrNeblett
when I said that 2 of my biggest fears were public speaking and stats...idk about the 1st one but at least I can say I’m turning in the last assignment that qualifies me for the PhD concentration in quantitative psych
@UNCPsych
Our latest paper on transitioning to telehealth for psychotherapy during COVID-19 is now available! We found that a group therapy parenting intervention in an underserved community is both effective and accessible/acceptable!
Happy to share my accepted abstract for

focusing on sociocultural risk and resilience offline & online, mHealth, & mental health disparities. Thank you to all my mentors, everyone who shared their job materials, read over mine, and supported me in any other way during this long journey!

My research lab submitted a written scientific testimony urging for internet safety standards that may reduce the likelihood that Black and Latinx youth are exposed to online racism.

We should have a week where we all agree to not send new emails and instead we just use that time to think about how we’re going to respond to the old emails from months ago.
From my own experiences and what I’ve been seeing from peers, this is the time of the year that we are going THROUGH. All I can say is, find opportunities to be kind to yourself. Skip that class/meeting, take that nap, ask for an extension,etc. You can’t give what you don’t have.
This is who has been dragging me the last two days.
For context, he refused to eat anything other than Popeyes French fries for Thanksgiving dinner (relatable content, tbh) and my dad put his own plate in front of him for picture purposes.
So excited to share that I'm starting a new chapter with the amazing faculty and students at UMD's Clinical Psych PhD Program! Can't wait to learn and grow under the mentorship of

@HeyArtez
! Grateful to be supported by the NIH Director’s Transformative Research Award! 💫
I'm getting to chaotic levels of open tabs on Chrome....to the point where I have the same site open multiple times because I keep losing the previous tab lol.
Excited to welcome Dr. Henry Willis
@HeyArtez
as a new Postdoctoral Research Scientist in
@SAFElab
! Dr. Willis will be supporting a new digital grief project in Harlem.
I love seeing my fellow Black and POC scholars collecting the things they deserve and worked for!
And for those that applied to various things that didn’t work out this time around, just know me (we) have all been there. I learned a long time ago that “no” just means “not yet”.
