Four, at the top of the attainment distribution, grades are more likely to be under-predicted, with students from low income being more likely to have their grades under predicted than students from high income backgrounds.

Aaccuracy varies with attainment of the students, with lower attaining students being far more likely to have grades over predicted,once controlling for prior attainment background, state school students are less likely to be over predicted, than students in private & gram school

Second, students from disadvantaged backgrounds and state schools were more likely to be overpredicted, whilst those at independent schools were more likely to receive more accurate predictions.

In a report for the University and College Union on predicted A level grades (Wyness 2016) found the following. First, only 16% of applicants achieved the A-level grade points they were predicted to achieve, with the vast majority (75% of applicants) were over-predicted.

Furthermore, the difference between achieved grades and predicted grades increases as attainment reduces. For example, students who were predicted AAA, were predicted 0.88 grades higher than they achieved, whereas students who achieved DDD were predicted 4.93 higher 2/2

In a report on the predicted versus the actual grades for applicants to university, (UCAS 2019) found that on average for 18 year old UK students studying for A levels are predicted 2.35 A level grades above which they achieved. 1/2

In a research study on how teachers predicted the A level grades of their pupils by (Gill 2019) found that for a sample of 741 pupils, 46.4% of predicted grades were accurate, 31.8% were over-predicted and under predicted in 21.4%.

Research by (McManus et al. 2020) on predicted grades and actual A level grades for applicants to UK med schools found for 2010-18 - 48.8% of predicted grades were accurate, over-predicted in 44.7% of cases & under-predicted in 6.5% of cases.
