Our paper doesn’t claim to be groundbreaking or solve the challenges we see, but to raise awareness of the issues and promote the positive ways SM can be used.

Perhaps doctors Tweeting in a professional capacity should also have their accounts verified with a green tick for example.

With the rise of racism/bullying and trolls on social media the logical first step is for @Twitter and all SM platforms to verify all accounts.

The key limitation is the definition of unprofessionalism. In any case, there’s a fine line and a balance needs to be struck. With the emergence of various new social media platforms @gmcuk @AoMRC @TheBMA desperately need to update their guidance.

As someone who seldom Tweets but watches the soap opera #MedTwitter from afar, our paper seeks to establish the balance between the public viewpoint of doctors Twitter activity and that of doctors. It’s opened a can of worms.
