Version 1 of our Augmented Reality,
#CFD
in a smartphone, app
#AeroDoodle3D
is now available on the
@Apple
app store... give it a whirl and let us know what you think...
Today this happened (new Twitter name) rarely, in academia, does success happen purely at an individual level (& certainly not in my case),so may I take this opportunity to thank all the students, colleagues, collaborators and supporters who have facilitated my journey to Prof🙌
Studying the wheel loading on our final (a628 mph) run of
@Bloodhound_LSR
- the drop off in rear axle downforce of ~2kN as we passed through 500 mph is almost spot on what we predicted
Delighted to have received this award last night for my work over the past decade on the
#Bloodhound
project 🥇- we really must not give up now
#SupportBloodhound
It's that time of year again when I pore over dozens and dozens student reports in which they try to wow me with the ability to do
#CFD
flow vis and then convince me then understand what they are seeing... it is educational (for me) and entertaining
#F15
#EGM90
#AdvancedAero
I am thrilled that, as we await investment (and the right timing) for a record attempt, now the general public can go and see the famous red and white
@Bloodhound_LSR
at the amazing
@CovTM
Was hanging out with the locals for the first rolling run of
@Bloodhound_LSR
- we were loving it! Has definitely captured the hearts of the
#HakskeenPan
local population :-)
Final day of paternity leave. This little lad is two weeks old today! Has been an absolute joy to carve out precious time out to hang out with him. Mixed emotions about heading back to work tomorrow...
#WorkLifeBalance
Making some great progress on our handheld virtual wind tunnel project this week... our augmented reality enhanced CFD on a smartphone is really coming to life!
Here’s the evidence everyone! The flow around
@Bloodhound_LSR
went sonic this morning at 610 mph (Mach 0.79) at a point on the side of the car just above the rear delta.
#transonic
#criticalMach
Just been out into the track to test the surface with Ron Ayers and Andy Green. The surface quality will affect the way shock waves interact with it - critical for us getting the
#CFD
modelling right!
It's coming! The official
@Channel4
documentary on the
@Bloodhound_LSR
story so far... 6pm (UK) Saturday 14th Nov... please spread the word as we need to use this as the platform to raise funds for the final push into the record books
We have a number of Ukrainian students studying with us here in the
#Aerospace
Department
@SUEngineering
- I can only imagine what this morning must feel like for you all. We stand with you and will do whatever we can to support you in these dreadful times. 🇺🇦
We're looking for an ambitious PhD student to come and join our group to work on
#CFD
based optimisation methods for the design of high speed engine intakes. It will be done in collaboration with
@ReactionEngines
and to find out more:
Back after a fortnight in the sunshine and into my first week in my new role as Head of the Department of Aerospace Engineering
@SUEngineering
- here we go!
Lecture prep day… tomorrow in
#EGM90
Advanced Aero we will add the viscous terms into the Euler equations and then non-dimensionalise to see why Reynolds number is so important!
Very proud of how swiftly
@SwanseaUni
has moved and adapted to this crisis... both students and staff have done an epic job so far... stay safe everyone
"There are many changes ahead and I just want to make you feel reassured that we are thinking about you all of the time."
A message from the vice-chancellor to
#SwanseaUni
students.
It's incredible how well-matched the vast majority of data from
#2019HST
matches
#CFD
predictions - the job now is to figure out where and why there were (some) mismatches...
Just preparing to launch the first major
#CFD
post-processing assignment on the
#EGM90
Advanced Aero module this semester… we’ll be asking students to interrogate the transonic flow fields around an F15
Anyone else discovering that lecturing online is a biz-zillion times more draining than doing it in person?? All the energy output but limited adrenaline rush or real time positive feedback vibes in return...
Big thank you to everyone who turned up to my Inaugural yesterday - blown away and humbled by the number that showed up (and watched online). The recording is now available here:
Lecture preparations… if all goes to plan in tomorrow’s
#EGM90
Advanced Aerodynamics lecture we will derive the Euler equations from scratch… and hopefully have some fun along the way…
There can’t be many universities in the world where 2mins after a meeting with students you’re sat eating lunch somewhere like this!
#BayCampus
@SUEngineering
Dr Ian Mabbett and I are on a mission today at
@THORPEPARK
to convince kids that coming to hear us talk about
#Engineering
is more fun than riding rollercoasters 🎢 wish us luck!!
8hrs ago I was sat here with the water lapping on the sand, now it’s 100s of metres away, what incredible forces must be at work, if only we could harness this for free energy.... oh, yes...
#SwanseaTidalLagoon
The main skill I’ve learnt so far during the
#COVID
lockdown is how to sing nursery rhymes with the kids whilst simulataneous providing feedback on a PhD thesis
#WFH
This is it folks, last chance to get your hands on the worlds fastest car before it becomes a museum exhibit... if you think you can help us get
@Bloodhound_LSR
across the line now’s the time to shout!
OK folks... I’m off to give myself the greatest Christmas present 2020 can offer: 2 weeks off Zoom and Teams... see you on the other side!
#HappyChristmas
Super excited to be relaunching our popular Bloodhound For Schools outreach project this morning. Here’s our team of amazing
@BLOODHOUND_Edu
ambassadors ready and raring to visit your school to share the
@Bloodhound_LSR
project and inspire…
“The algorithm has failed” - starting to hate this phrase as much as “Brexit”... algorithms are written by human beings to do a job for them... the people behind the algorithm failed if anybody failed
Very sad to hear of the passing of the legendary Ron Ayers. Was an honour and privilege to work alongside him throughout the design of
@Bloodhound_LSR
The
#LSR
community has lost one of the all time greats.
When we studied dimensional analysis on
#EGH303
last week didn't think our own prime minister would provide an example of how to get an equation dimensionally inconsistent!
Anyone else find the whole “We will be led by data and not dates.... here are the dates in which we will relax each restriction” thing a bit weird... ??
The chemistry here is exactly what will happen inside the rocket system of
@Bloodhound_LSR
when we run with a rocket next year (minus the food colouring and on a larger scale!)
Carl Nelson demonstrates the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide using a catalyst. The addition of detergent and food coloring captures some of the oxygen gas generated in a colorful ball of foam. With a rainbow effect [full video: ]
An early start... off to London and meetings at
@imperialcollege
about an exciting new venture called ‘Expert:Ed’ which will take science and engineering out into schools across the UK...
Reading this excellent work by
@profmarkreed
on the train north to teach a course
@colegcambria
- unfortunately nowhere does he recommend accompanying work with a pint to improve productivity!
