Cubs Top 30 Prospects in 2019 - Where are they now?
1. C Miguel Amaya
Had multiple years of injury delaying his arrival to the majors, finally made it up to the majors last year and has been establishing himself as a quality Catcher
I know it’s been going on for a while now, and I don’t have a huge problem with it or anything … but feel like we should have been allowed to vote on “Whoop! There It Is!” as the Cubs hr song.
2. INF Nico Hoerner
Made the majors just one year after being drafted and solidified himself as a Gold Glove 2nd Baseman who could also push for it at shortstop. Was rewarded with a 3 year extension before the 2023 season.
26. INF Christopher Morel
He needs no introduction. Morel has turned his opportunity in 2022 after a Nico Hoerner injury and made the most of it, becoming one of the Cubs best players and a dangerous threat whenever he steps up to the plate.
Scott Fitterer may go down as the worst GM OAT:
- Gave up 2, 4, 6 picks for 2 mid seasons of Sam Darnold
- Traded for slumping Baker (1-5 record with Panthers)
- Got fleeced by San Fran for CMC
- The Chicago Trade
- Rejected 2 firsts for Burns, will lose him for nothing
8. LHP Justin Steele
Established himself as the Cubs ace in 2023 and was the Opening Day starter this year before getting hurt during the game. Was pushing for the Cy Young last year and could do the same when he comes back in a few weeks.
4. RHP Adbert Alzolay
Began his major league career as a starter in 2019, but transitioned into a reliever after missing most of the 2022 season with an injury. Established himself as the Cubs closer about mid last year and remains in that role today.
7. OF Brennen Davis
Another once highly-regarded Cubs prospect, injuries have hampered him in 2022 and 2023 following a breakout 2021 season. He’s in AAA and a good season could see his name finally get called to the bigs.
10. RHP Keegan Thompson
Keegan had been a quality swing starter/reliever in 2021 and 2022, though he took a fall in 2023 and bounced between AAA and the majors. He started this year in AAA but could be recalled even as soon as today.
3. LHP Brailyn Marquez
One of the Cubs most regarded prospects between 2019-2021, made his major league debut at the end of the 2020 season, but didn’t pitch in a game again until 2023, majors or minor. Was let go after last year and is currently with the Astros AAA team.
And that’s it! It was fun going back through our farm system of the past and seeing where these guys are and seeing how much better our farm got. If you liked this thread, make sure to share it with your friends and follow for more!
15. OF Nelson Velazquez
Nelly provided some great moments with the Cubs, including his Grand Slam against the Mariners to complete an improbable comeback. With an overflow of outfield depth in the system, the Cubs traded him to the Royals last year for Jose Cuas.
5. OF Cole Roederer
Roederer’s path to the majors has been slow, especially with the cancellation of the 2020 minor league season. He seems to have plateaued at AA though he has made it to AAA before and could still make it back this year.
11. INF Zack Short
One third of The Compound podcast, Short was traded during the 2020 season to Detroit for Cameron Maybin. Short played in the majors in Detroit but never established himself there. Currently playing for the Mets as a bench bat.
@JaquanBrisker
MJ still has:
•2 more rings
•2 more final mvps
•1 more DPOY
•1 more season MVP
•9 more scoring titles
•3 more steals leader
Sorry Brisker but MJ remains the 🐐
9. RHP Cory Abbott
Abbott never found his footing in the majors in Chicago when he made it up in 2021. He pitched for the Nationals in the majors in 2022 and 2023 as an up and down reliever. Currently finds himself with Seattle’s AAA team.
27. RHP Riley Thompson
Thompson is still in the Cubs system today, currently with the AAA Iowa Cubs. A good season could see him make his big league debut if an opportunity arises.
25. RHP Duane Underwood Jr.
Underwood never could establish himself with the Cubs in 2018, 2019 and 2020 and played for the Pirates big league system after leaving the Cubs. He currently finds himself pitching for the Yankees AAA side.
6. INF Aramis Ademan
Development really halted due to the Covid cancellation of the minor league season in 2020. Went from High-A in 2019 to Rookie ball in 2021 before retiring from baseball all together.
A twist in Las Vegas: Kliff Kingsbury has withdrawn himself from consideration for the offensive coordinator job of the Raiders, per his agent
@ErikBurkhardt
.
13. LHP Brendon Little
Little appeared in the bigs during the 2022 season as a Covid replacement when we went to Toronto. He never made it back in 2023 and was traded to the Blue Jays last offseason where he finds himself with their AAA squad.
24. RHP Dakota Mekkes
The 2nd third of The Compound podcast, Mekkes got to AAA with the Cubs but never cracked the Big League side. He was most recently playing Independent League baseball.
14. RHP Richard Gallardo
Gallardo currently still plays in the Cubs organization, as he’s moved up slowly through the minors and currently finds himself at AA.
17. RHP Thomas Hatch
Hatch was traded to the Blue Jays in the 2019 season in exchange for David Phelps. He made his MLB debut with the Jays in 2020 and played a few seasons there before going to the Pirates last year. He currently pitches for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp in Japan.
20. INF Trent Giambrone
Giambrone made a major league appearance in 2021 during our late season Covid crisis but didn’t last. He last played in the Mexican league with Algodoneros de Unión Laguna but was released earlier this month.
28. INF Luis Verdugo
Verdugo is currently in the Cubs system with the AA Tennessee Smokies. He’s been a solid hitter though injuries have slowed his development.
@M3llOFromH3llO
@arturasfanclub
@wojespn
The Bulls were in talks before the 2020-21 Trade Deadline. So most of the work had been done. It was just a matter of finishing the deal when the FA period started.
@CubsZone
They’re gone. Get over it. These past couple of seasons have been disappointing with the old core to say the least. We haven’t won a playoff game since 2017. Bring in a new core. I want a Cubs team that can win, not one based on nostalgia.
