I’m David McAvoy, and I'm running for Arkansas State House of Representatives.
As a longtime Jonesboro resident, who was born and raised in Arkansas by working folks, I can’t sit by and let lawmakers in Little Rock stand in the way of a brighter future.
I just finished reading the ALA’s report released earlier today and it’s my view that the appropriate action is for the Arkansas House to impeach Governor Sanders.
Pretty clear by this point that the overpriced lectern doesn’t exist. Arkansans deserve to know what the Governor spends public money on and if she’s going to this much trouble to cover it up then chances are it’s pretty bad.

Walked into a coffee shop in Jonesboro and immediately heard “She doesn’t care about us! This state is just a stepping stone for her.” According to the owner everyone that’s come in for the last week has been livid about the governor and her attack on schools.

Arkansas should be funding public schools to the benefit of all Arkansans, not defunding and privatizing them so a few wealthy families sending their kids to private schools can get that money. “LEARNS” is a destructive scam and it’s got to go.
#arpx

When Mike Beebe was Governor and Democrats controlled the legislature, Arkansas schools were ranked 8th in the nation for their quality. The policies Republicans have pushed since then have hurt our schools and “LEARNS” will be a nail in our state’s coffin if it stays in place.
Librarians being fired for having books a politician doesn’t like is something Americans of the past dreaded happening under an authoritarian regime. Now it’s happening under the rule of Arkansas Republicans.

Jason Rapert would be an embarrassment to Arkansas in any capacity but particularly overseeing institutions that facilitate education and understanding. This appointment by the Gov hurts our state almost as much as her cartoonish corruption & bad policies.
Gov Sanders is mad that she got caught abusing her office (again), this time by jet-setting around the state on the ASP plane. Now she’s reportedly pushing a bill to reduce transparency in government as a response. The word for that is corruption.

Arkansas is one of only about 3 states that has not opted to extend postpartum Medicaid coverage despite having the highest maternal mortality rate and the third highest infant mortality rate in the U.S. This must change.
Less than 5% of students receiving the new vouchers previously attended a public school. As other states have shown, we will continue to see the voucher program become an expensive subsidy for wealthier families at the expense of everyone else.
Voters in Conway just rejected Governor Sanders’ extremist candidates by wide margins. Arkansans are seeing what the Governor and her party are pushing on Arkansas and realizing just how bad it is. Her rubber stamps in the legislature are next. Let’s bring hope back to Arkansas!
When you mess up or do wrong the right thing to do is own up to it, apologize, and then do better. You don’t try to weasel your way out of it. That’s an Arkansas value the governor needs to remember now that she’s back in the state.

Gov Sanders said she would sign a teacher pay raise if it came to her desk. Democrats in the legislature just rolled a good one out w/ no strings attached. All Republicans have to do is support teachers and vote for it…

The book banners that successfully pushed a massive funding cut to the Craighead County library are now ringing in the New Year on their Facebook page foaming at the mouth over their latest “sexually explicit” book…The Diary of Anne Frank. I wish I was exaggerating.
Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and First Gentleman Bryan Sanders paid for their family's commercial flight, their hotel and their tickets to the Super Bowl in Las Vegas earlier this month, a spokeswoman for Sanders said on Wednesday.
Know how much of state funds we spend on housing as homelessness becomes a big problem in Arkansas? $0. Know how much we’re spending on mental health? $0. Expanding Medicaid? Nope. Preschool? Nope. We should be investing our surplus in our people instead of squandering it.

Let’s talk about the best governor Arkansas ever had-Dale Bumpers. The story of his administration is a great reminder of what made the Arkansas many of us grew up in, and an example of what we could do again if we elect people that will follow in his footsteps. (Thread/1)
We keep learning more about the Governor’s habit of living high on the hog on our public funds-13K for a party, 20K supposedly for a lectern, a few thousand here, a few thousand more there. This adds up and we need to have real scrutiny of all of it and put a stop to it. (1/2)
“LEARNS” is a scam, that half billion prison is a waste of money, our tax code is becoming more regressive instead of less, child labor is being brought back, and the last session of the legislature was a horror show. Let’s change our government and bring hope back to Arkansas.
The evidence of corruption, abuse of office, and law breaking by the Sanders Administration is piling up. Jack Ladyman did her bidding to gut FOIA to try to hide it. I’ll work to bring honesty and transparency back to our government.

I'd be the first openly gay man elected to the Arkansas Legislature. Winning this race wouldn't just double the amount of LGBTQ+ lawmakers, it would provide a voice in the room for a community who has been locked out of our state government for far too long.
Knocked a few doors after work today. Met a man who said he liked Governor Sanders until the attack on FOIA. We talked a bit and he said he’s voting for me next November.
Right now, a lot of hard working and determined Arkansans, who care deeply about the future of public education in our state, are out giving everything they have in the effort by CAPES to put the “LEARNS” Act on the ballot. Let’s talk about why we should

There’s no more reason to doubt it. We can take this state back and bring hope to Arkansas again. Sarah Sanders’ candidates and agenda were rejected in school board elections across Arkansas and we can win even more if we put the work into it.
The Governor’s attempt to gut FOIA to protect her travel records was about one thing-keeping the public from knowing who rode on her frequent state plane trips with her. Arkansans have the right to know if lobbyists are traveling with and influencing the Governor.
Last night I signed the petition to put a sales tax exemption on menstrual hygiene products and diapers before the voters. Reducing the cost of basic necessities like these will benefit struggling Arkansans and I strongly support this measure.
Arkansas Republicans made what was obvious official-they will squander the surplus of the public’s money on tax giveaways to rich people that fund their campaigns and lobby them while letting our public schools and teachers languish. This is what corrupted government looks like.
Someone asked me today why anyone would want to push an education plan to destroy our public schools. It’s simple-there are people looking to make money off privatized education and they’re circling like buzzards waiting for the governor to serve them Arkansas on a plate.

This governor spent an estimated 1.3 million in public money on a publicity stunt to raise her national profile. She’s abusing her office for her own gain and if the legislature doesn’t stand up to her it will only get worse. The power of the purse should be used to rein her in.
When Mike Beebe was governor, the state was phasing out the tax on groceries so regular folks didn’t have to spend so much extra on food. When Republicans took over, they stopped that and started trying to eliminate taxes on income and capital gains for rich folks.
#arpx
#arleg
As Gov. Sanders travels around the country, it’s important to remember that since Jack Ladyman and company gutted FOIA at her request we will never know if she’s traveling with lobbyists or on public funds. I’ll fight to restore transparency in our state government.

We’ve got a Governor who’s more focused on becoming the next Sarah Palin then on doing her job. Performative clowning is taking up so much of her time she couldn’t even properly vet a parole board appointee who lost a job for sleeping with a 17 year old. We need real oversight.
In just 100 days Sarah Huckabee Sanders has done more to embarrass and hurt our state than any other governor in the last 50+ years. But we will clean her mess up and bring hope to this state. It starts by getting rid of her rubber stamps in the legislature.

Registered voters yesterday. Some of them were older than my parents, had never voted, and needed help with spelling the name of our city. Can’t begin to describe how helping them get registered felt.
The people of Conway just rejected book banning, bigotry, extremism, and the destructive right wing agenda in favor of freedom, strong public schools, and good government. Let’s keep going and elect more people who will fight to bring hope back to Arkansas.
Here is exactly what will happen with our state surplus. Republicans will give rich people a lot of tax freebies, nothing will be invested in for improving our state, regular people will be left to struggle, and a later fiscal crisis will be created. The writing is on the wall.
Privately run schools taking public funds while not having to provide students with licensed teachers, counselors, a library, etc. This is what Jack Ladyman voted for and what “LEARNS” is bringing us. I am running to end this foolishness.
Vouchers in Arkansas are proving to be a subsidy for wealthy families, just as they end up being everywhere else they’ve been implemented. That subsidy comes at the expense of our public schools and hurts our entire state in the process. “LEARNS” should be repealed.

The money private school families get under a new voucher program isn't enough to fully cover tuition+expenses in most instances.
Families are on their own for anything beyond $6,672, knocking some poor students out of the running.

I graduated from a public school. My 8th grade English teacher lit a fire under my feet and made sure I applied myself. My high school librarian made sure I got my first scholarship. I owe where I’m at now to public education and I won’t let it be destroyed without a fight.
Back in August, when Gov Sanders pulled a 1.3 million publicity stunt, I said the legislature needed to put a stop to her abuse of public funds. Everything we’ve learned since then has confirmed the need to do so. If the people serving now won’t, we can replace them next Nov.
Personally, I’d rather Governor Sanders disclose how she’s paying for her expensive lifestyle & who’s flying with her on all those plane trips than pick on trans people for being different. I don’t understand her meanness and dishonesty, but then I was raised not to be like that.
Arkansas has a corruption problem. The attack on FOIA, the Governor’s repeated abuse of office (the misuse of the state police plane, Lecturngate, etc.), the purchase of our state government by the wealthy and well connected-its all part of it. It’s time to clean our state up.
Firing librarians because they have books on the shelves that a politician doesn’t like…because people might read about ideas or people that politician doesn’t like…is un-American.
“I would rather be fired for supporting the First Amendment than sued for violating it,” Library Director Patty Hector said Monday. The Saline County Quorum Court passed a change that will give the county judge power to fire librarians.

In school board elections across the state Tuesday, Arkansans rejected book banners, bigots, those who pushed for the Gov’s destruction of public education and anyone SHS even got near. We can turn things around and bring hope back to Arkansas. Let’s do it.

1) Let’s take a deep dive into the reasonable protections the Teacher Fair Dismissal Act that Sarah Huckabee Sanders wants repealed provided to teachers in our state and why it’s important to keep it in place.
When the Governor pays more than 19K in public funds for just a lectern & can’t produce it, good sense tells you she’s covering up something wrong.
When the Governor calls a special session to gut FOIA to keep you from seeing who traveled with her, good sense says something’s up
Arkansas has the 9th most unfair tax code in the country now with regular folks paying far more than their fair share and our governor/Republican legislators like Jack Ladyman giving endless giveaways to the rich and well connected. It’s time we changed this.
When asked why her administration didn’t prioritize expanding Medicaid coverage for a year for new mothers in the face of our state having the highest maternal mortality in the nation Gov Sanders repeatedly dodged the question. We need legislators who will make this a priority.
Margaret Brennan to Sarah Sanders: You're talking about the sanctity of life. Your state had one of the highest maternal mortality rates. Why don't you want those moms to get care for a full 12 months instead of just 60 days?
$13 million for vouchers next year for just 2000 students. Could you imagine how much more good that money could do for all Arkansas kids if we used it to improve public schools rather than fattening the bank accounts of private schools?

When Republican apologists say that we have to kick people off Medicaid like the state is doing, remember that’s a lie. The federal gov has warned the state to slow down and be careful. 45 other states are doing it better. They chose this cruel path.
I’m tired, my feet hurt, and I just got home after a long day, but I knocked a whole lot of doors and I am thankful to every voter who said they’d vote for me today. Let’s bring hope back to Arkansas!
Vouchers under “LEARNS” are responsible for 60% of the state’s overall budget increase as they climb from 31.7 million up to 97.5 million for 2025. This is going to break our state budget and do so while taking from 95% of Arkansas kids & families.
Imagine if instead of wasting half a billion dollars on another prison to hold just 300 more people, we invested a fraction of that in addiction treatment and prevention. We’d reduce prison crowding, help a lot of people, and address the damage addiction does to Arkansas.

Right now, Arkansas is short on hope. Our public schools and future are being destroyed, our government is working solely for those who can buy it, and corruption is running rampant. Next year though, we can vote for a change in our legislature and bring hope back to Arkansas.
The cuts to public education under “LEARNS” have just begun. This attack on our schools will hurt the vast majority of our state and benefit only the wealthier few and those who aim to get some of those diverted public funds. Jack Ladyman voted for this.
That
@arkcapes
missed putting “LEARNS” on the ballot by just a hair (less than 500 signatures) with no money and such a short time frame is incredible. They’ve built an incredible organization and there’s so much more they can still do…. (Thread/1)
Librarians shouldn’t be treated as criminals for having books a politician doesn’t like and book banning and censorship of ideas is un-American. I’m glad an injunction was issued on this godawful bill and hope it is totally struck down in due time.
Staff cuts have begun at our local library following last year’s defunding vote. Branch closures will likely be next. People here were lied to by book banners and bigots in order to get this result. The good news is, we can have another election and fix this mistake.
I’m in this race to bring hope back to Arkansas and to regular Arkansas like the folks that I grew up with. I will fight for our public schools, for a fair economy that works for all Arkansans, and against the corruption festering in our state government.
54,000 kids.
54,000 Arkansas kids.
7% of the overall population of kids here.
Many of them still qualified for Medicaid but cut off because of sloppy mistakes by the state and barriers our government has put in their families way.
This is wrong.
The governor is bragging about giving millions away to rich people and big businesses, many of them from out of state. It’s the payback they get for buying her the governor’s office. Instead of blowing our surplus like that, we should be investing in regular Arkansans.
#arpx
Governor Sanders wasted at least $1.3 million in public funds just for a publicity stunt and to get on Fox. If she's not reined in by the legislature, she will continue that kind of corrupt abuse of her office. But there's a way to recoup that money & keep her from wasting more:
I think this picture shared by Senator Tucker as he and other legislators toured the Arkansas School for the Deaf & Arkansas School for the Blind & Visually Impaired speaks volumes. Our state ran a surplus, but were these schools prioritized? No. This is the result.
Unfortunately the state has not adequately prioritized the needs of these campuses. As a result, disrepair and neglect are apparent. If we judge a society's worth by how well we care for our most vulnerable, the dilapidation of these institutions speaks volumes. 3/6
“LEARNS” continues to be a disaster and will only get worse. Let’s repeal it, reinvest in public education, support teachers, and get at the real problems that effect learning, from poverty to classroom size.
News flash for state government: if you just keep recruiting new teachers and don’t address the problems that are running them out of education to begin with you’ll just burn out all those new teachers you recruited and be back here wondering what happened in a couple of years.
A mom of two who finds out she was cut off Medicaid while in the ER. A disabled, nonverbal woman requiring full time care cut off twice-once because of a mistake by DHS and again because of a “glitch”. A parent unable to get her child’s asthma medication refilled for months…
And remember, this only concerns one of the Governor’s scandals. It doesn’t deal with the allegations of bribery, her potential misuse of the state plane, or her potential abuse of taxpayer funds for her extravagant trips and lifestyle. This was just scratching the surface.
Just a reminder both to politicians in power here in Arkansas who think they can do whatever they like with immunity because they have an R by their name and to people who think everything is hopeless in Arkansas: Things change.
1)Vouchers are a scam that will defund our public schools. 2)Schools don’t improve when you defund and close them. 3)Teachers deserve more respect and support than they get. 4)Our governor is handing our state and your kids over to buzzards looking to pick us all clean.
#arpx
It makes no sense to help less than 5 percent of kids with vouchers at the expense of the other 95 percent. Especially when we could take care of nearly 100 percent just by properly funding our public schools, supporting teachers, and providing adequate services.
Saline County is now experiencing what we did in Craighead-the entire fascist freak show. A word of warning-these people will not just go away, there is no compromise that will appease them, and nothing they say is true. They want power and control and they have to be defeated.
The Governor and her party running the legislature continue to prioritize tax giveaways to the rich and to big businesses, leaving ordinary Arkansans paying more than their fair share to keep our state going. This needs to stop.

Arkansas is booming!
In 2023, we jumped 26 spots upward in U-Haul’s Growth Index. And as we keep cutting taxes, improving schools, and fighting crime, newcomers are going to keep flooding in.
The Governor blowing $1.3 million in public money on a camera seeking publicity stunt might be the most egregious scandal yet from her administration. The legislature should be putting a check on this kind of abuse of office.

The audit found at least 7 potential violations of the law & the case has been referred to the AG & a prosecutor. Additionally, reading the report leaves the sense that the Gov’s office both attempted to avoid cooperation where they could & cover their tracks where they had to.
This is a serious accusation, and it merits investigation. Governor Sanders’ corruption has been on naked display her whole administration but offering a job as a bribe for political favors, if true, ought to result in her impeachment.
“LEARNS” is rapidly destroying education in Arkansas. It robs from the 95% of Arkansas kids for the benefit of less than 5% of families, most of whom are pretty well off. That’s in addition to the rapidly increasing cost and a long list of bad provisions. I’ll work to repeal it.
Gov Sanders’ Super Bowl trip likely cost more than her annual salary. Arkansans have every right to know if it was an illegal gift or if she abused public funds. She won’t be honest with Arkansans, so let’s elect legislators who will hold her accountable.
Gov. Sanders’ first year has been marked by endless corruption, grift, power grabs, and empty stunts. She’s severely damaged education, eroded transparency, and repeatedly made Arkansas look foolish. Legislators like Jack Ladyman enable her but we can replace them in November.
Corruption and abuse of power like this only gets worse if there are no consequences. That the law should apply equally to all of us is an old American ideal but one we are dangerously close to abandoning altogether for those with money and power.
SHS is fond of photo-ops like the one here, but empty words and pics don’t change the fact that on her watch Arkansas has been found to be the worst state to be a police officer based on low pay, our high violent crime rate, and budget priorities.
#arpx
This is not ok. The last thing our public money should enable is discrimination against kids with disabilities. “LEARNS” should be repealed and I’m going to keep fighting until it is.
Gov Sanders is off auditioning for Trump’s running mate. She’s made it clear we’re just a stepping stone she doesn’t care about and yet Jack Ladyman has voted to gut FOIA to protect her corruption, her “LEARNS” act to wreck our schools, & every other mess she’s leaving Arkansas.
Thank you to everyone who called and wrote in expressing opposition to the appointment of extremist book banners, particularly Jason Rapert, to the state’s library board. Your engagement generated bipartisan opposition, the strength of which will only grow if you stay engaged.
We shouldn’t be having to wonder about funding for the schools for the deaf and the blind. We shouldn’t have communities going without water while our state government does less than the bare minimum. Folks like Jack Ladyman and others in his party have broken our state.
