I wrote a thing about Orwell and "patriotism"; the odd and interesting "love" part in "love of country", that isn't dinner dates but might be to do with possession and jealousy. You should read it because it is amusing, some think insightful.
abc.net.au
Orwell’s well-known contrast between patriotism and nationalism wasn’t accurate in his time, nor is it useful in ours. We need to conceptualise more clearly a good, self-transcending love of country,...

There is some sophistry here (I made no “claim” of such a form). But you link an interesting and extremely hetrogenous essay. It deserves a reply in greater depth on a later occasion, companion to my ABC piece on Orwell & Ireland, perhaps.
@DavidRobjant The claim that 'Scotland is not a colony' is on the most banal and legalistic level, technically true. On all other levels, it's false. To make that claim is to completely misunderstand the nature and complexities of empire.

The quote tweet chain leads back to a post in which (under cover of argument about recognition of Scottish independence) Sara Slayers is engaged in a more heartfelt project: to get Scotland internationally classified as a colonised nation, thus effacing cocolonisation &Darien.
@SymbolStones This was all obvious (to me, anyway) in 2014. Perhaps it is now obvious to many more. But is it obvious to enough?.

And yet by your statements and actions you give Hamas reason to persist in what they cruelly do, both to those upon whom they visit fanatical jew hate and upon their own population, noting that it _works_ to achieve their aims.
Videos of emaciated hostages are a horrifying reminder of the evil of Hamas and the plight of those still held captive after so long. No family should have to see their loved ones like that. The UK must continue to press for the immediate, unconditional release of all hostages.

It beggars beleif that you can want to ‘put pressure on Israel’ without understanding that this takes the pressure off the fascists who started the war. And Hamas didn’t just ‘claim’ something. They backed it up with video of a condemned Jew digging his grave at gunpoint.
Now the Hamas terrorists behind the October 7 atrocities are trying to erode support for recognition of a Palestinian state by falsely claiming it would be a victory for them. Hamas do not represent the Palestinian people and have no future in Gaza with a two-state solution.
