Alright baby, lets do it: a thread on fiction for socialists to check out. I'll start w/ literary fic, then get to genre fic. First: one of the great American novels, possibly my favorite. Follows the Joads, who represent the dignity of working ppl during the Great Depression.
trying to de-rot my brain by reading more. recommendations for *fiction* for socialists? homage to catalonia is already on the list.

Overall, it's wild to see how the fervent rightwing nationalism of the day was in part misplaced alienation from capitalist modernity, but refracted in a reactionary, resentful way that worked to undermine solidarity, rather than promote it. Feels worrying similar to the present!.
Interesting to note that Hitler became poor about a year after moving away from home, but his background as the son of a civil servant & his own dreams of becoming a great artist made him revile the proletariat. His poverty made him even more hostile to them, not less.

This kinda checks out as a metaphor for Europeans and Indigenous people, because the latter had a lot of societies that had advanced features, such as their land management techniques. They just werent as industrialized.
Avatar may present itself as technology vs nature but the truth is that the Na'vi are as advanced as the humans: it's just that their tech, which is based on ecosystem integration, doesn't register as such. The RDA picked a fight against a peer, they just don't know it.

I still use the quote in my classes, I just explain that it was a mistranslation. It's too good a quote not to use, lol. (For those who don't know, the old story was someone asked Enlai what the French Revolution meant and he replied "it's too early to know").
Just found out when asked about the French Revolution, Zhou Enlai was referring to May 68 and not 1789, quote ruined.

I dislike Israel as much as the next guy, but this is just not true. US imperialism did this to Iraq, not Israel. Theyre responsible for a genocide, thats bad enough, we don't need to pretend theyre to blame for US imperialism in the region.
This is what Americans did to Iraqis because israel said they had WMDs
