on how utterly useless
@DubCityCouncil
is at managing our city, in particular the public realm. No other major European city seems to get so much wrong, so often. I'm honestly not sure what Dubliners have done to deserve Councillors & a Council that are so incompetent.
Scumbags on the Dart throwing bottles at each other. Fair play to the Gardaí 💪🏻💪🏻 As a grown man I’ve felt increasingly uncomfortable on the Dart, even during the day! Judges need to be harsher. And
@IrishRail
needs more surveillance on trains.
In news that may surprise no one, new figures from
@eurostat
today show Ireland is now the most expensive country in the EU, with prices over 46% above average.
🇮🇪+46%
🇩🇰+45%
🇫🇮+27%
🇸🇪+24%
🇳🇱+17%
🇫🇷+10%
🇩🇪+9%
🇪🇸-3%
🇵🇹-10%
🇲🇹-12%
🇷🇴-42%
Here’s an in-depth look at the figures.
These 3 thugs had committed numerous burglaries & terrorised people over many months. There was actually a reported drop in burglaries in the wider Leinster region after their deaths. They're no loss to society & the Garda should be commended for his bravery. Not sent to prison.
A garda accused of endangering life during an incident where three men died in a collision in Dublin must face trial before a Circuit Court judge and jury
My hot take of the day is that if someone who hasn’t worked in a decade savagely murders your girlfriend you get to say mean things about them without being told to shut your hole.
Stumbled across the rarest of finds in Dublin these days.
A laneway without a bollard, pole, tarmac blob, or M50 sign in sight. So naturally I took a picture for the archives.
This cobbled street must be protected at all costs!
Big misunderstanding around how green energy works so here's a thread as they say.
Firstly: there is only ONE electricity grid in Ireland. It's operated by Eirgrid & owned by the Government.
No matter who your supplier is, your electricity will come through the exact same wires
Today SSE Airtricity announced a 24% increase in the price of their '100% green' electricity. The cost of wind has not gone up.
On Tuesday SSE announced earnings for the last year will be up to 17% higher than expected.
This is pure war profiteering. We need price controls.
If it's even possible I think the lighting department at
@DubCityCouncil
is worse than the paving one. A Thread! Let's start off with the Rosie Hackett Bridge. Half the lights have been broken for around 3 years now. In no other city would this go on in such a prominent location.
A few people said I chose an overly “mean” shot of Dublin yesterday when comparing the city to Bordeaux.
So here’s how Dublin’s College Green (surely the jewel in the city’s crown?) compares to Bordeaux’s main plaza.
Beautiful work on display by
@DubCityCouncil
once again.
All these lads are wearing expensive looking trainers and tracksuits. But of course we’ll be told this behaviour is all down to poverty and that they’ve all been failed by the Government and that it’s all someone else’s fault and not theirs.
Beautiful paving. Lovely lighting. Great mix of shops. No cars. No bollards. No clutter. No organised begging. No feral youths looking to pick a fight. And Malaga isn’t even a “nice” city by Spanish standards. Why can’t Dublin city centre be like this?
The more I watch that video of South William Street the more it pisses me off. Workers trying to do a decent day's work for a decent day's pay and getting attacked and glassed by little scumbags. What riles me up even more is that they're almost 100% likely to get off scot-free.
I wonder did he cry thinking about the man he'd violently assaulted and then robbed? Or are his only tears for himself as he's afraid there might be heavy repercussions for what he did? Either way, I've little sympathy for him.
As someone who's gay I can 100% say that my biggest worry when going out is being attacked by a gang of feral youths. It's not whether someone calls me a nasty name. The Government should spend its time making the streets safer as opposed to implementing hate speech legislation.
An example of how Bordeaux does streets with trams versus how Dublin does it. Note the lack of overhead tram lines, poles and clutter. What have we done to deserve a council as awful as
@DubCityCouncil
?
It absolute riles me up that stuff like this doesn’t get more attention on here or in the media. A foreign worker out trying to make a living and some scrote goes off with his bike.
I'd argue Ireland needs one more bank holiday to bring us into line with the European average.
Making Good Friday an official public holiday would probably be the easiest and least costly way to do that seeing as around half of businesses observe it as a holiday anyway.
Suffolk Street has been closed to traffic for around 3/4 years now.
During that time
@DubCityCouncil
has:
❌ installed public seating
❌ planted new trees
❌ widened pavements
❌ made any discernible improvement to the public realm
✅ installed a new pointless sign
What a “view” of Trinity, eh?
It’s tough to even know where to begin... 🤦🏼♂️
I’ll say it again,
@DubCityCouncil
is a complete DISASTER when it comes to anything to do with the public realm.
I now have ZERO sympathy for this young man. Out on bail after crying in front of the judge after he violently assaulted a tourist in Temple Bar. Then what does he do upon release? Rob two teenagers a few days later. Lock him up. Somewhere. I don’t care.
BREAKING - A teenager who received bail on Tuesday after he was charged with an “extremely violent” robbery of a UK tourist in Temple Bar is due to appear in court after he was charged in connection with the alleged robbery of two 15-year olds last Thursday, also in Temple Bar.
I really don't get the whole 'Covid passports are a threat to my civil liberties!' argument. You need a passport to travel. A licence to drive. You probably have to show ID to get into work. Not being able to dine indoors is hardly some type of humanitarian breach of your rights.
In most European capitals their main “iconic” city centre bridge would be beautifully paved. Instead in
#Dublin
we get tarmac covered in chewing gum. And this yellow yoke.
#uglydublin
Another day. Another tourist attack.
Come visit Dublin. To see the bollards and get a beating!
65 years old. Female. Dragged along the ground and into a laneway in daylight almost in a premeditated attack.
We're bloody right to get the army in.
Today’s hot take on Twitter is that you’re a wet wipe if you feel unsafe in parts of Dublin. Because all the muggings, glassings, theft and feral behaviour are in our minds.
O'Connell Street is only unsafe for those from the leafy suburbs of South Dublin because it's the only time they encounter actual poor people and it fucking terrifies them. These wet wipes get a nosebleed if they travel too far north over the Liffey.
What is the end goal here? For almost every student accommodation, hotel and nursing home in the country to be housed with IPAs from Algeria and Georgia or wherever? What impact is this going to have on students trying to find accommodation? Utter madness.
@hazechu
That may be very true Hazel. But if it were a man talking to a woman like that you’d be the first to complain. And rightly so. Manners cost nothing. She came across as needlessly rude and aggressive. And I say this as someone who agrees with assisted dying.
👏Laois👏County👏Council👏blocked👏Electric👏Picnic👏 Not Leo. Sometimes I wonder do Irish people realise we live in a parliamentary democracy & not some presidential autocracy. Just because you’re X or Y doesn’t mean you can demand anything you’d like get done. Leo pushed for EP
Random stabbing at Dublin Airport in September
Radom stabbing of an elderly woman last Thursday on Chatham Street
Now a random stabbing of young school children on Parnell Square
Thankfully no one has been killed.
But I really hope this doesn't become the norm in Dublin.
Fresh charges for committing 'riot' have been brought against two men already accused of serious offences during an outbreak of violence, looting and arson in Dublin on 23 November last year
In most European capitals it would be pretty tough to find 5 different styles of lamppost within the one city. Let alone the one pic. But this is Dublin!
Hardly a plastic bollard, parking sign, or steel pole in sight 😍
How DO the people of Edinburgh survive!?
Amazingly, Scottish drivers don’t need street by street sign directions from the city centre to the M8 either…😏
Hi
@DubCityCouncil
👋
I know you’re super busy these days erecting M50 signs, installing bollards and keeping the streets safe.
But any chance you could get round to fixing these tarmac blobs on the city’s “premier” shopping street? It’s been about 7/8 months now.
It’s been a tough year on everyone. Especially the young. And I hate to say it. But having seen more and more of the chaos in town the Gardaí 100% have my support.
Oh my God. WHY did no one tell me about this BEAUTIFUL road traffic installation on Dublin City’s historic Stephen’s Green!? The mix of colours and signs, the layout, the cheap plastic bollards. It all just SCREAMS heritage Dublin. Thanks
@DubCityCouncil
!
It’s expensive.
But Bewley’s rent is €1.5m a year.
Or over €4,100 a day.
Around €1 of the price goes to Gov in Vat.
So they need to sell around 550 hot chocolates a day to pay it.
And that’s before wages, energy costs or rates are factored in. Or the cost of the chocolate!
Grafton St. Dublin’s premier shopping street. At 9am on a sunny summer morning. While it’s good that incidents like this are finally getting media attention & will hopefully force the Gardaí & Gov to act, it’s a shame to see what’s happening to our city.
So 3,400 new asylum seekers have arrived into Ireland in the first 2 months of the year alone. So we’re on course for over 20,000 this year. And another 20,000 next year? It’s ridiculous there’s not at least 1 person on the panel to highlight we can’t cope with this.
#TonightVMTV
Things are clearly coming to a head. So much of this feels very predictable though. It feels like the Government hasn’t been listening to people for quite some time. Scenes like this are partly the result.
The tarmac. The poles covered in manky stickers. The 3 signs saying pretty much the same thing. The ugly bollards. All outside one of the city’s major tourist spots. Beautiful work by
@DubCityCouncil
as always. Great bunch of lads.
If you want to commit the perfect murder just get behind the wheel of a car as they say. Just nine months ago Carl mowed down and killed a pedestrian. Suspended sentence. Now he kills a child. 18 months. Out in under a year no doubt. Christ.
A 34-year-old man who pleaded guilty to careless driving causing the death of a seven-year-old boy while reversing a road sweeping vehicle has been sentenced to 18 months in jail
Another day. Another attack by feral youths in Dublin. The city centre is becoming more dangerous by the day while the Government is asleep at the wheel.
What sets these attacks apart and makes them so worrying is that they’re random and unprovoked.
Really sums up the state of Dublin’s public realm.
✔️The ugly plastic bin (which replaced the sleek stainless steel ones for some reason)
✔️The ugly electrical cabinets which should be underground
✔️The ugly overhead tramlines which should be underground
✔️The ugly phonebox
💶€400 compensation for a €200 flight is why I absolutely will not have a bad word said about the EU!🇪🇺🇪🇺
👨💻Remember, if your flight is delayed over 3 hours you’re likely entitled to compensation. But you must claim it yourself. The airline isn’t going to remind you to do it.
It’s so Dublin that 5 months after Burger King on Grafton Street closed down, Abrakebabra seamlessly moved in. Yet 5 years after the tourist office around the corner closed, we’re still waiting for our world-famous international food hall.
I actually agree with assisted dying (in certain circumstances obviously). But this type of rude, aggressive and condescending questioning is uncalled for. Can you imagine the uproar if a male senator spoke to a female committee guest like this? I’m amazed William stayed so calm.
Senator Lynn Ruane rudely harangues Prof William Binchy of the Pro-Life Campaign in this clip. She even accuses him of being a 'white, privileged man' (thereby singling out his race, class and sex).
A “beautiful” new array of bollards down by the harbour. What the hell are these even for?
@dlrcc
getting as bad as
@DubCityCouncil
it seems. Once again, it never ceases to amaze me that there’s ENDLESS money for poles and bollards but none for public toilets or fixing pavements.
As this pic shows, there is nowhere DCC is unwilling to install yet more poles & warning signs. Like you actually couldn't have fucked up a view of one of the city's most important buildings more badly if you'd tried...
You go to places like Paris & Prague that have 100s of buildings, bridges & landmarks lit up spectacularly. In Dublin the council can't even replace a few bulbs. The lack of pride it has for its city is infuriating.
@RayMcAdam
@CByrneGreen
@dubcivictrust
@DubCham
@LeoVaradkar
Beautiful work on show as per usual by DCC. Ten grand or so really well spent. All that plastic great for the environment too. We just need a few M50 signs.
Dublin isn’t the worst city in the world but its problems can be neatly summed up in two ways in my opinion.
Firstly, it’s a 3 star city charging 5 star prices.
It’s also a small city with increasingly big city problems: drug addiction, homelessness and awful traffic.
The cities with the slowest traffic:
🇬🇧 London: 36 min 20 s
🇮🇳 Bengaluru: 29 min 10 s
🇮🇪 Dublin: 28 min 30 s
🇯🇵 Sapporo: 27 min 40 s
🇮🇹 Milan: 27 min 30 s
🇮🇳 Pune: 27 min 20 s
🇷🇴 Bucharest: 27 min 20 s
🇵🇪 Lima: 27 min 10 s
🇵🇭 Manila: 27 min 00 s
🇨🇴 Bogota: 26 min 20 s
🇫🇷 Paris:…
Let's start with electrical boxes. No one loves them quite like our Council does! They're like mini Daleks that are multiplying like rabbits all over Dublin. In most cities an effort would be made to keep these underground & out of sight. But our council doesn't seem to care...
How in God’s name can a tender to provide a few sandwiches, chocolate and hot tea and coffee take so long? Genuine question. No wonder we haven’t built a single metre of new rail line in decades if this is how quick things move. Can they not just do it themselves?
@claresambo
We are working on a full catering tender process for the national network. Unfortunately, no timeframe is currently available. Further details are available on the link below. -AD
Yes DCC! More street clutter! That’s exactly what the city wants and needs! And it goes so well with those eight beautiful electrical boxes. Not to mention the gorgeous paving…
Does this new advertising panel mean you’ll have MORE money to erect MORE signage!? Can’t wait!
Like him or loathe him. You can’t not admire at times how direct and to the point Michael 0’Leary is. It’d be great if more politicians were like this.
"I would apologise to nobody for it. Our first job here is to look after our passengers, our second job is to look after our staff."
Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary joined
#TodayCB
after the company bought the bulk of a new housing estate near Dublin Airport, to rent to staff.
Huge sympathy to the Centra security workers on Dame Street who are trying to deal with this lad who’s threatening to beat them up after calling them n***er c*nts. The abuse city centre workers have to put up with these days is despicable. There’s no excuse for it.
Although it’s still a bit too car centric, Dalkey is the standard EVERY town & suburb of Dublin should aspire to. Beautiful shopfronts, great mix of retail units, clean streets, heritage lamp posts, almost zero street clutter, and almost zero signage (just how do they manage 🙄)
A big lump of tar. The granite paving destroyed in the name of yet another fucking useless sign. Rubbish lying out on the street. And yet another Carrolls shop. Dublin city centre summed up perfectly in one pic.
The country clearly cannot cope with the numbers entering. Now we have the taxpayer-funded Irish Refugee Council helping an asylum seeker sue the State because he wasn’t given immediate accommodation.
“Sources said that this group is believed to be the same individuals responsible for other attacks in the area in recent weeks and months.
This group of about 20 local youths have been going around assaulting people throughout the summer.”
Then why the hell was no action taken!?
Paul on the other hand has never been a minister, never been in government, and never had to make an important or difficult decision in his entire political career.
Alan Kelly was one of the architects of austerity and enforcer of water charges.
He was Minister responsible for housing in the government that built the least public housing in decades and invited in the vultures, sowing the seeds of today's housing crisis.
Good riddance.
That’s some “achievement”.
Richard is also objecting to the building of a wind farm. In the Irish Sea. In the midst of a climate & energy crisis. With energy prices at record highs.
Maybe I can get Richard to help me with objecting to some bollards 🤔😆
@justinhendrix
In Ireland it’s never taken me more than 5 minutes to vote. This is insane. So many things in America simply do not work. And yet you’re convinced you’re the greatest country on earth. It’s bizarre.
People in East Wall have concerns about asylum seekers living next to them (and are branded racists and far right).
People in Blackrock are concerned about anyone living next to them (and are branded heroes of the planning system).
Funny old world..
Residents of Blackrock in south Dublin have initiated their second High Court challenge to planning permission for hundreds of apartments in Temple Hill granted to the co-owners of the Press Up Hospitality Group
The state has spent almost €2 billion on housing asylum seekers and Ukrainians in just two-and-a-half years, eclipsing its equivalent spend in the previous two decades combined
The man knocked almost unconscious. The fighting. The racist, aggressive homeless man. The drug addict roaring her head off. The tarmac blob. The crappy shopfronts. The clip epitomises Dublin city centre quite well I’d say.
@MYUwrites
@_figensezgin
This is a dog though. Humans have a way deeper connection and bond with dogs than any other animal. As they do with us. To imply a dog is simply “food”almost verges on psychotic. Also, how do we know this wasn’t these kids’ family pet?
All the Shinners shouting about how Mary Lou wouldnt have got away with 'sleeping on the job' & how Eamon Ryan has got off lightly😄The women is literally leader of a party thats got away with murder, has covered up child sex abuse,& has no time for social distancing at funerals!
It’s not just tourists.
This is the type of crap shop workers and security guards in the city centre have to put up with on a daily basis.
God only knows who else fell victim to this guy yesterday.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he punched some random individual on his way home…
❗️32% of all tenants in rent arrears
❗️51 tenants owe more than €27k
❗️A further 136 owe between €19K & €27K
❗️Another 589 households have rent arrears of between €11k & €19k
Imagine getting a house in the heart of the city centre for next to nothing and then paying nothing
Fair play to
@RBoydBarrett
. This is a really nice new shopfront. It’s simple. Clean. Understated. A nice colour. Oftentimes the offices of TDs can be the worst culprits for bad shopfronts so this is nice to see. Good job👍🏻
For the past two years anyone who raised child protection concerns around hundreds of unknown male asylum seekers being placed in their community was branded a far-right racist. Yet here we now have the government admitting that it’s a valid concern.
@Editorialz
This is a very poor take. The death of her father has nothing to do with anything. Criticise her performance as minister all you want. I certainly have. But her personal life, especially something as deeply personal & tragic as this, shouldn’t be used for political point-scoring.
And in case you're wondering, this is how
@dlrcc
and
@robertburns73
do cycle lanes a few KMs up the road in Dun Laoghaire. Shows what can be done what you have a bit of taste, style & common sense. Note the lack of poles, clutter & bollards...
Once again, your regular reminder as to why mortgage rates in Ireland are the second highest in the Eurozone.
“Those who pay, pay for those who don’t.”
In no other place, including Scandinavia, would someone get away with this. No wonder Ulster Bank, KBC and Starling all fled.
What an awful take from
@RuthCoppingerSP
. Yeah, Irish society is so well known for installing a culture for men to go round chopping off multiple gay men’s heads🙄
In today’s comparison: How Seville does trams versus how Dublin does trams! Went for a winter wonderland shot as the snow makes everywhere look nicer. Right? So don’t say I’m being mean to Dublin! Look at those lovely bollards to complement the wires and the poles 🫠🫠
Corporate tax 2009: €3.9bn
Corporate tax 2022: €26bn
As with stamp duty receipts during the Celtic Tiger, we're gonna look back on this in a few years' time & wonder where we spent all this windfall. And of course the city hasn't looked worse in decades
Today the IT is reporting that some kids won't have any place in secondary school next year. While the Indo is reporting more than 2/3rds of GPs in rural areas aren't taking on new patients. But yeah. The country isn't at capacity as we'd 8mn living here pre famine or something.
Torremolinos, a relatively small, mid-end resort town in Spain, putting Dublin’s municipal waste collection to shame. Lots of trees and vegetation everywhere, and no tarmac blobs either. Dublin could learn so much from how Spanish cities are managed.
A fair question which every right-minded person in the country has no doubt asked themselves over the past year. We’re far too forgiving in this country of people who contribute absolutely nothing at all to society and simply leech off taxpayers.
Ryan told the court how they met, their plans for each other, but described Ireland as "not safe anymore". "How can someone come to his country, get social housing, social welfare, not hold down a job of any description and never contribute to society for 10 years?
#AshlingMurphy
Next up - cycle lanes. I'm a HUGE supporter of cycling in the city. But Jesus - there has to be a better way of installing cycle lanes. Dublin is fast becoming 'The City of Plastic Bollards'. They look cheap, tacky & awful & make the city look even more of a mess.
@PadraigBelton
You do realise the hotel is being paid (handsomely) by the Government? The hotel isn’t providing the accommodation for free? Also, it’s a guaranteed payment for months on end for the entire hotel (or at least most of it). No wonder they’re doing it.
I can completely understand why some people might get confused and tweet something like Paul has. But Paul should know better as an elected TD. I suspect he does - but why let facts get in the way of outrage and a good tweet.
Whatever about chancing your arm and hoping to get away with it, to suggest people took out the money “in good faith” believing a bank was giving out money for absolutely free is utterly ridiculous. Surprise, surprise: actions have consequences.
Many BOI customers yesterday took out cash in the good faith belief they had this money.
Some will now face high cost unauthorised overdraft fees & upcoming bills going unpaid until it is cleared.
BOI must positively engage with customers to avoid undue hardship & distress.
Between this and the gang knife fight on Talbot Street I’m so happy the Government is focusing so much time, energy and political capital on the important things like hate speech legislation.
Holy shit. Is
@DubCityCouncil
actually REMOVING bollards! 🥹
On a serious note, put benches, seating or trees here if you really feel the need to protect the pavement. Or just enforce traffic laws.
& of course the city's streets are always filthy, grimy & smelling of urine. In my opinion, Owen Keegan is grossly unsuited for the job of managing our city & should be replaced. Mind you, many of our councillors seem equally as useless & appear happy with the state Dublin is in.
DCC giving a statement to
#rtept
that all’s well. No surprise there. They’re delighted with the fact a deepclean is planned for O’Connell Bridge next month. It needs one EVERY month. What hope is there for the city when its managers genuinely all seem to think everything is fine.
The ridiculous thing is that if the Gardaí strongly retaliated then they’re the ones who’d probably end up in court. No one will want to be a guard at this rate.
I’ll say it again. There needs to be serious consequences for those who attack members of the emergency services.
BREAKING: Two more Gardai have been viciously assaulted. This time in Carlingford, Louth last night.
One officer was kicked in the face 3 times in the alleged incident, while another was bitten. Latest here:
I neither cycle nor drive. But I live in Dun Laoghaire and I can honestly say that the costal cycle route is the best fucking thing that’s happened in the area since the pier was redeveloped. It’s an amazing amenity for Dun Laoghaire and the wider city and it gets great use.
The only thing the
@greenparty_ie
have done during their time in Government is screw up the parking in Dún Laoghaire
Oh yeah, and license an unholy alliance Government that has destroyed all hope for a whole generation.
I'll finish on a positive note with a nice pic though. Dublin has great potential & parts of it, particularly the areas that aren't managed by DCC, are lovely. If only it could be managed better by people who actually have a bit of style & who show some love for the place...
I can never understand how parts of the city centre, during the day, right beside tourist attractions, can be so littered.
The Government is dripping with billions of extra euro. What would it cost to keep Dublin a bit cleaner during the day? €10mn? Surely we can afford it.
