Smooth functional landscapes in microcosms. A great pleasure to write this News and Views for Skwara et al. As they show, moderately sized datasets can be enough to predict the functional performance of synthetic microbial communities.

To our knowledge, this is the first empirical and systematic proof of these transitions in community dynamics. In the lab, environmental stochasticity is minimized and we could focus on these 2 community-inherent control variables.
