What are the coarse-grained physiological traits needed to predict microbial ecosystem functioning? Would you join us embracing this challenge through a KITP program in 2026? ⬇️
Deciphering the gene-organism-environment triad is key to understanding microbiomes. But to go beyond who's there, we need to identify relevant coarse-grained physiological traits from (meta)genomes. Fill in https://t.co/1189SAVCgM to show interest in a KITP program about this!

Smooth functional landscapes in microcosms. A great pleasure to write this News and Views for Skwara et al. As they show, moderately sized datasets can be enough to predict the functional performance of synthetic microbial communities. https://t.co/17IVcTPLZu

We seem to live in a "boom and bust" world, with every new thing collapsing as soon as it becomes available. How do collapses happen? Are they predictable? Check our new paper @HSScomms, with @SDuranNebreda, Michael J. O’Brien and @ralexbentley

To our knowledge, this is the first empirical and systematic proof of these transitions in community dynamics. In the lab, environmental stochasticity is minimized and we could focus on these 2 community-inherent control variables.
