The RRF has 8 Fast Sealift Ships, large RO/RO and container vessels. The ships are nearly 950 feet long, close to the length of an aircraft carrier, and capable of crossing the Atlantic Ocean in six days. FSS are the fastest cargo ships in the world.

Emergency response equipment has been loaded onto MARAD Charleston-based Ready Reserve Force vessels in preparation for the storm. Primarily used to transport combat support equipment during times of conflict, the vessels are also used to support emergency recovery efforts.
