The final piece of getting “in shape” is heat acclimation. This is more for practice than games, although heat during games is definitely an issue to consider. It takes 7-14 days to acclimate athletes to the heat. This means it’s best to slowly introduce exercise exposure.

Football Energy System Demands. While football utilizes all 3 primary energy systems(ATP-PC, anaerobic glycolysis, & aerobic), the demands of the game are heaviest on ATP & anaerobic. This means the actual conditioning you do post practice needs to train these systems by.

Repeated Sprint Ability. Obviously football is a game dominated by speed. An athlete’s ability to maintain high velocities late in game is essential to winning games and championships. This means we have to maintain high velocity ability training throughout season. By dosing.

Work Capacity. Work capacity is the total work ability of an athlete before their performance starts to be impacted through fatigue, increased risk of soft tissue injury, or cramping. In reference to football think about how many snaps an athlete can take before fatigue sets in.

Aerobic Conditioning. Aerobic capacity is the basis for the body’s ability to aerobically recover during both repeated bouts of intense exercise(ie football) & longer endurance work. It is trained through both steady state cardio & interval training, and while training.

I think an unmitigated winner of day one of fall camp is Quinton Brown. Looked awesome, gets a shout out from Maddog during interviews, got a shout out from Spencer last Thursday. Know the name now Bronco Nation.

The idea that you can’t build mental toughness is silly. No one is as tough at 12 as they are at 22. There’s a process of overcoming challenges that builds mental resilience. The problem is you can’t force that process: only individuals with a desire for toughness can grow it.
