I started running and asking people “how much would you give me if I run tomorrow? And people would say “I will give you Sh100 per kilometre”; others would say “if you run 300km, I’ll give you Sh100,000” and I said game on: Vincent Ogutu, Vice Chancellor - Strathmore University

Keep long runs aerobic. 65-75% of max. Conversational. Try not to push too hard in workouts or get out of breath, particularly in the early miles of long runs. You'll be able to finish stronger if you start slow. And in a race, you'll pass a lot of people in the closing miles.

Most athletes think training hard day after day is the recipe for success. But the real recipe for success is training hard and recovering harder.

In a running race, never wear anything new, particularly if in a marathon. Do not buy clothes at an Expo and test them the next day. Test your race clothing during training runs--the longer the better--so that you know that they are as comfortable as they are fashionable.

In heavy training phases, simplify life. High training stress requires low life stress. Can't control all but make an effort to simplify.

The plan was to do an easy 10k but I got carried away the view of Mt Kenya ahead of me and I kept going. And then I met this old lady who asked me nuu urakuingata (who is chasing you) I smiled and assured her all is well it just me enjoying the hills.

In heavy training, sluggish starts to runs are normal. Just ease into runs and please don't let GPS force your pace. Let pace come to you.

I like these lunch time quickie runs simply because you are chasing time. It's also the only time I get to enjoy a cold shower after
