After his final game in New Orleans, Kobe Bryant took the time to record a brief message for my daughter, Nathalia after we momentarily conversed about being a dad to little girls who enjoyed the game. My “Pink Mamba” doesn’t play anymore, but she still watches this. As do I.
I’m so glad that Drew Brees was not part of this Saints season. Those men earned their own identity this season. They played their asses off for 18 weeks, not knowing who/what was going to be available in more than half of them. They deserve to be appreciated, not overshadowed.
Her name is Teresa Weatherspoon. She is a national champion (La. Tech) and an Olympic gold medalist. She is a coach and a likely HoFer. Any of those could have been in this headline.
Drew Brees was 42-71 for 523 yards with 3 TDs and 2 INTs after his first two games with the Saints. In 3 of his first 5 starts he threw for less than 200 yards and had 5 total TD passes. Give Jameis some time.
So this was interesting. I was talking to some SKC staffers I know as the Lakers’ team bus is pulling off. Suddenly, Luke Walton comes around the corner. Bus gone. It had to come back for the coach. Damn shame.
I’ve never owned a home & never thought I would. From the ages of 12-40, I didn’t believe in anything permanent. Bipolar disorder didn’t allow me the peace of mind to think I deserved it, or would be around long enough to have something real. I’m scared and excited, but I’m here.
Sources close to Anthony Davis have confirmed to me that he was neither aware nor consulted on the progress or deteriation of contract talks between the Pelicans and Rajon Rondo and that he wasn’t pleased. How this impacts his relationship with management remains to be seen.
I repeat,
@Saints
, it is long overdue to get the Dome Patrol a statue. They belong in NFL lore with the Fearsome Foursome, the Steel Curtain, the Orange Crush, the Doomsday Defense. They defined the 1st period of real optimism for Saints fans and made the Dome what it is.
New Orleans has a real basketball history. A heritage. Something to be proud of. The greatest HS pg I ever saw is from New Orleans. New Orleans has All-Americans. New Orleans has champions. Men and Women. Don’t let them shame you for loving New Orleans basketball.
The Clippers have been in LA for 40 years, and had empty arenas for 3/4 of that time. Nobody said move them. Atlanta couldn’t sell tickets when they were winning 60 games. Come on now, stop making New Orleans the focus.
Okay, the attendance thing…again. Based on percentage of tickets sold since 2015 (ESPN figures)the Pelicans ranked -
2015: 14
2016: 13
2017: 16
2018: 16
2019: 19
So, never in the bottom 10. In that period they’ve beaten out BOS, ATL, PHX, DEN, PHI, etc., in certain yrs.
Chris Paul: asked to be traded
Anthony Davis: asked to be traded
Zion: rumored to be unhappy already
New Orleans has been in the bottom 10 in attendance for the last decade. Stars don’t stay there. Maybe move the Pelicans to Seattle.
If Anthony Davis wanted to choose his next team, he really should have waited until free agency. Any demand he makes after asking for a trade means nothing. The responsibility of the Pelicans is to make this team competitive, not the Lakers.
Pelicans/Hornets jerseys that should be retired (numerical order):
#3
- Chris Paul
#11
- Jrue Holiday
#23
- Anthony Davis (it is what it is)
#30
- David West
If that No Limit gold tank rolls out onto the court before Game 3, that would be one of the most epic New Orleans sport’s moments ever. Just throwing it out there.
There’s no way any GM worth a damn takes AD over Luka or Jokic even if fully healthy. That’s just insane. Luka and Jokic elevate their teams, AD can play at a high level if everything is right. They are not cut from the same cloth.
.
@stephenasmith
defends his argument that AD is a top-7 player in the NBA when he’s healthy.
“I’d take Anthony Davis over Luka. I’d take Anthony Davis over Jokic. Yes I would.”
Re: Jaxson Hayes
He has to understand that it doesn’t matter if he can do things no one else can do, if he can’t/won’t do the things every one has to do.
Somebody has to look up for me the last time a home team lost a game when it:
- won the turnover battle
- won TOP by more than 12 minutes
- ran 30 more plays than the opponent
- outgained the opponent by 70-plus yards
- and had fewer penalties and penalty yardage
The Pelican’ fan base will not fall apart after the trade. They want to see a team compete as hard as it can on a nightly basis, and they didn’t get that far too often. This group isn’t going to win a bunch of games, but they are going to leave it on the court.
New Orleans doesn’t care about your trophies. New Orleans cares about New Orleans. If you’re a fan just because, as my man
@Impatientbull
says “that bitch got New Orleans cross da front,” then be that. That doesn’t mean you like to lose. It means you hope they win.
If the Pelicans fail as a franchise, it will not be because of the city of New Orleans. The city has lived through cheap owners, questionable to indefensible player decisions, injuries, and incompetent front offices, and yet fans still wild out about this team.
The Pelicans are now 4-2 in their last 6 games. In those 4 wins Lonzo Ball has averaged 18.5 ppg while shooting 53% from 3. In the 2 losses, he’s at 10.5 ppg and 27.3% from deep.
This Pelicans offseason is playing out like an episode of Bar Rescue, except Griffin isn’t cursing everyone out. He’s already come in and figured out the problem with his team of experts. He has the concept. The summer will be the stress test, and we’ll get the big reveal in Oct.
Good news. Pop’s fever has broken. Down from 102 to 99. Still can taste and smell. Thank you to everyone who shared their concern. I needed that support. I heard from people who I didn’t know knew I existed. I hate that this shared pandemic is how we met, but thank you again
Brandon Ingram went 1/3 from the floor and 0/2 from the line in the fourth.
He came into the night shooting 41 percent in the fourth (32% on 3s).
He’s not the closer.
Respect again to Brandon Ingram. His game is so much more efficient than it has ever been. He’s grown into a legitimate leader. I say this all the time, he was a statistical All-Star before, he’s an actual All-Star now, game or no game. (1/5)
The Pelicans are under no pressure to move Davis right now. He’s under contract. If he doesn’t want to play, fantastic. Sit him, roll out the tank, and improve the team’s lottery position.
Good afternoon. I’m currently finalizing details to host a daily sports talk show on
@Sports1280
, beginning 8/5. This is extremely exciting for me. I hope you’ll join me from 8-10am each morning for
#HardInThePaint
with David Grubb.
I’m sorry, but this offseason the Pelicans are going to have to make a choice. You cannot have your top 2 players missing 30-plus games each season and expect to win at a high level.
Pelicans All-Star Zion Williamson – sidelined since Jan. 2 with hamstring strain – re-aggravated the injury and is expected to miss additional weeks after All-Star break, David Griffin says.
The Pelicans have allowed 105 points or less in 16 games. They are 13-3 in those games, 3-23 in all others. This is a defensive basketball team. That’s step one to being a contending basketball team.
Team wins since 2012-13 (AD’s rookie season):
Los Angeles Clippers: 345
Los Angeles Lakers: 198
Milwaukee Bucks: 253
New York Knicks: 210
New Orleans Pelicans: 242

How weird is this?
The
#Pelicans
record through 23 games last 8 seasons:
2020-21: 11-12
2019-20: 6-17
2018-19: 11-12
2017-18: 12-11
2016-17: 6-17
2015-16: 6-17
2014-15: 11-12
2013-14: 11-12
The Pelicans have no excuse not to play the young guys in the back court. Bledsoe coming off the bench makes the most sense for the present and the long term development of the roster.
Neither Cousins or Rondo were “disloyal” to the Pelicans. They made business decisions. That’s the risk of free agency. Players can make choices.
They take more money & we call them greedy. They take less and we call them stupid.
Lonzo leaves the game with a +/- of 30. It’s his highest as Pelican, & 7th game with a 20 or better. The Pels are 7-0 in those games.
In those games he is 39/79 from the floor (.493), 23/50 on 3PA (.460), with 7 apg and 1.85 spg.
Pels improve to 34-8 when he’s +1 or better.
If anything the fans in New Orleans have been remarkably consistent, considering that the quality of the product has been anything but. The fans the team has are loyal and passionate. Underserved, by the team and media, but still loyal and passionate.
Remember these things:
- BI and Lonzo couldn’t shoot a 🏀 until Sept.
- Bzdelik joined the staff in Sept.
- Hart is 6 mos. removed from knee surgery
- Favors is playing with a hurt hamstring
- Jrue has played poorly in 2 games and missed the 3rd
It will get better.
