What's France going to do once they're returned? If they're dumped back on the beach they'll just try again the next day, and then it's two-in one-out, ad infinitum. At minimum we'd need to fingerprint expellees and discount them from calculations should they attempt to return.
We have detained the first illegal migrants under our new deal before returning them to France. No gimmicks, just results. If you break the law to enter this country, you will face being sent back. When I say I will stop at nothing to secure our borders, I mean it.

In my view this wasn't a case for resignation, it was a case for reconsidering and changing the proposed law. On Ms Ali's story there was nothing improper in her conduct - but she was trying to ban it anyway.
