With more games having longer dev cycles, you'll see more stories like these. You can't account for trends changing drastically because you have to stick with your initial concept. You can't make any major design changes because the game is in limbo. You're essentially stuck.

we call it "depression" colloquially, but someone talking about how they're depressed when they don't mean the disorder are not automatically incorrect. I really am not a fan of how this has been flattened in the past few decades...

this is an interesting example, because both the OP and the replies get it wrong in different ways. "depression" is not in itself a disorder. that's Major Depressive Disorder. a "depression" CAN be a deep unhappiness.
They are not a sociopath, they are cruel. They do not have borderline personality disorder, they are emotional and dramatic. Most controversially, they are not depressed, they are unhappy. 2/

So apparently the desert was created because of "fan demand" of an open world metroid,then they regretted it years later once players started hating open worlds. Also seems they wanted to make gameplay and shooting changes to match the times at one point. This was a mess dawg LOL

It's not that gacha games can't kill off characters but writers are too hesitant to do so because of the very real backlash they'll get from parasocial weirdos and whales (their main moneymakers). You see this with the Nikke controversy.
my biggest problem with gacha games is that they're all too afraid to kill a character off just because they're a unit
