Run the query today and you'll find that there are just 4 results (nobody has joined the list in the last 6+ years). And I think that's part of the reason the graphic endures - it's an amazingly selective combo of stats. Good on Thad for making the cut, even if only for 1 night.
Incredibly, over the course of his 16-year, 1172-game career, Thad met the criteria for the infamous graphic for one night only 😂
He scored 11 points on Feb 28th dropping his career average to 13.499 points per game and he never got back to 13.5 again.
We used Synergy’s new Shot Quality metric to find out which NBA players make their teammates’ shots easier and which make their opponents’ shots more difficult.
Over the last 5 seasons, Steph Curry's average teammate's shot quality has improved +0.07 points per shot when he's on the floor. That's the biggest increase I've found so far...
The most justifiable part of the Thad Young graphic is the game count. The image aired Feb 28, 2018, on the night of Young's 800th game. And if we're celebrating Thad, it's fair to use an 800-game cutoff. Dropping the threshold down to 250 would've added Kawhi!
and Clark Kellogg.
Hilariously, Thad was 49.93% from the field for his career as of Feb 28, 2018. A less scrupulous graphic designer might have rounded up to 50 and called it a day. But! that would have crossed MJ and Bird off the list 😲
The criticism of the NBA's In-Season Tournament courts was warranted (they were apparently slippery and a bit jarring on TV) but their vibrant colors and splashy logos also created the backdrop for some really amazing photos 😍
This thread has my favorites - 1 for each court 📸
Throughout NBA history, 35 different players have won the league's MVP award – here they are sorted by the playoff series win percentages of their teams.
I've always assumed that these specific stat cutoffs were cherry-picked to include Thad and exclude as many other players as possible, but that's not quite right. Here's how the graphic would have looked if they used 10 PPG instead of 13.5.
The fine folks
@bball_ref
have created a list of every buzzer-beater in NBA history 🤯 Can you recognize any of the mystery players among the all-time leaders?
Same thing with the rebounds - dropping it down to 5 RPG instead of 5.9 would have yielded the same group. 13.5/5.9 were just Thad's career stats at that point.
Three players have a chance to knock Steph out of the top spot this season:
Nikola Jokic (currently +0.23),
Kevin Durant (at +0.24), and
Steph Curry 😂 (+0.26).
@DragonflyJonez
He had a season with more offensive rebounds than missed shots and turnovers combined, only player to ever do it. Literally created possessions.
49% from the floor feels like the silliest part of the whole thing (you were this close🤏to 50). And they could have dropped FG%, too. It would have expanded the graphic by just three, adding Scottie Pippen, Clyde Drexler, and Shawn Marion.
LeBron James needs 36 points tonight to become the all-time leading scorer in NBA history. Here’s a complete list of all the players he will have passed along the way.
30% from three is the only round number that was used in the graphic. And it's only fishy because it's such a preposterously low cutoff. Clearly it was tossed in to shorten the list a little, but who were we trying to keep out?
Had a lot of fun chatting with Tim about how Victor Wembanyama is breaking our player tracking reports by blocking "open" threes – ones where the body-to-body distance is more than six feet – something which seems like it should be impossible 😅
“he’s defying physics as I did understand them. now I’m recalibrating.”
Wembanyama's shot blocking is more than what he does to teams around the rim. he's making the NBA's best shooters rethink things, too.

These are some of my favorite places to look for data when I'm starting a new basketball project. If I leave out any of your favorites - please reply with more!

Andre Iguodala gives his impressions of Klay Thompsons’s scrimmage the other day. Said he kept finding himself passing to Klay and had a conversation with Andrew Wiggins, who commented: “Bro, he doesn’t dribble” yet scores

Fooling around with a new (to me) ratio of player tracking stats from the NBA site -- drives per 100 touches -- which should tell us something about how aggressive players are at getting to the hoop. This chart sorts 60 of the league's most frequent ball handlers by this metric:
17 teams in the league had 2 or 3 "homegrown" starters in their opening game last week.
6 teams had 4.
3 teams had 0.
There are 8 players who made their NBA debut with the Lakers who are starting for somebody else this year, more than any other team.
Some NBA players have played multiple offensive roles over the years. These charts highlight some of the role-defining rates that explain how their job has changed over time.
I'll start with the 😍 player development arc of Khris Middleton but lmk if you want to see any others.
Final standings for each NBA season since 1999. Playoff teams on top. Teams are sorted by playoff wins, regular season wins, and regular season points. 🧵 has a chart for each team.
A few days ago I shared this model of the locations of Steph Curry's record-breaking 2974 career threes. In this thread I'm going to explain how I set it up. If you prefer not to ruin the mystery of it all -- you should stop reading *now* 😂
I'm excited to say that, next week, I'll be starting a new career!! As an analyst

This season, more than a third of Marine Johannes' assists have been no-look passes 🤯 I broke down how she's used all that misdirection to become one of the most effective pick-and-roll playmakers in the WNBA this year.

Steph Curry scored 8 points on back-to-back-to-back Warrior possessions twice yesterday - once with 3 minutes left in regulation and again in the last minute of overtime. Nobody else in NBA history has had more of these scoring flurries than him.
After back-to-back 48-minute games, Josh Hart has run more than any other player this postseason. Here's a look at the 3 miles of court he covered last night.
