The NY Times skipped the press briefing, as well. Cops & loss prevention corporate spin a salacious tale of mythical shoplifting gangs putting poor Walgreens out of business; the truth is property crime declined in 2020 & these store closures were announced over 2 yrs ago

Walgreens will close five stores in San Francisco next month, citing what it described as a continuing problem of "organized" shoplifting in the city. One of the stores was targeted at least five times by the same man, the authorities said.

Members of our society to whom the rest of us have delegated the power of death over life must be held to the highest standard when they exercise that power. If not, the legitimacy of government is eroded. One judge will soon weigh in on the price of abusing that power.

"McKellop’s attorney Seth Peritz... argued....he wasn’t part of any...organized assault. Peritz also noted that McKellop reached out to a lawyer as soon as he learned the FBI was seeking him in February and that he arranged a voluntary surrender earlier this month."

Tonight is the first of eight nights of Hannukkah, the Jewish festival of lights. We hope that you are celebrating safely with your family and households. We hope the candles of Hannukkah are rays of light in the darkness of the current pandemic. Happy Hannukkah!

Did you know time served in out-of-state jurisdictions will not count as time served in VA? In cases like this one, where an arrest is made in another state for crimes alleged to have happened in VA, waiver of extradition can make sense. https://t.co/b4bJRn0kyu

Virginia is one of the last states where the fundamental right to a jury trial carries with it the risk that the jury will also impose a minimum (or even maximum) sentence. Most everywhere else a judge can sentence with the aid of guidelines (FAR less risky). /1
