Local at Culgoa @HerbieWarne filmed a carpet snake and its tree climbing ability ๐Ÿ- what great creatures, and so rare to see. Long live the carpet, see one about every 20-30 years in the creek. @gavin_jd_smith @Matt_HerringOz @CropDoctor54

More lentil desiccating & resistance testing today. First stop - the beautiful southern Flinders Ranges, focusing on brassica weeds resistance. DK time here, with a ST on the header to finish the job at harvest time. #Big6

Metro lentils coming in and impressed by the weed control with them. Not too many weeds got through. Just need a higher yielding variety but certainly a handy tool to use for some problem weed situations ๐Ÿ‘@JasonBrand @CropDoctor54 @agrobaz @SeanM_DMAg_SA @mattelliott32

At Lentil desiccation time, you get a good look at the yearโ€™s weed control, as well as the legacy of previous crops. 2 different clients here, 3 diff paddocks & all Lentils in 2022. Add Milk/Sow Thistle to the weed list of โ€œI didnโ€™t know weโ€™d capture that at harvestโ€! #ChaffDecks

One of the interesting observations from assessing the Grape Hyacinth trial this afternoon. Where the treatment was mowed/slashed, or had only Paraquat, the Ryegrass has taken over. Lentils really do not compete at all well with weeds!

I spoke to council first for permission to do the trial. They said it was a DIT road and wasnโ€™t their responsibility. Got DIT approval and I thought โ€˜happy daysโ€™. Good case of poor communication surrounding road ownership & responsibilities! ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Quick update - I just spoke to the DIT. It wasnโ€™t them that went over the trial, so they arenโ€™t to blame. ๐Ÿ‘

That feeling you get when you drive down to assess your Gazania trial and either the local council, or more likely, DIT, have mown straight through it. ๐Ÿ˜ก Hopefully, not a complete loss as the residual treatments may still be of use for future assessments. ๐Ÿคž

A pat on the back to growers who take almost a nil tolerance approach to weed blow-outs. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ Chemical fallowing patches save a lot of future grief in the rotation - & in a lot of cases, make up for it in future crops. This paddock will still need a paraquat to finish it off. ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Inbetween trial assessments today, Iโ€™ve been doing Milky Dough assessments in cereals for 2,4-D applications. I keep having gentle reminders of what Brome Grass can do when left untreated - in this case, in Cyclops Barley. Not much Barley left in the middle of the patch. ๐Ÿ‘Ž

Nice day for some trial assessments! Grape Hyacinth this time. Another garden escape, proving very hard to control. Similar to Star Of Bethlehem (SOB by name, SOB by nature), GH patches have progressively got worse over time. ๐Ÿ‘Ž

Capeweed showing up in chaff decks, now it is flowering. A surprising weed seed to think we capture at harvest, given its light, fluffy seed. Hugely effective at competing out Lentils. No need to yield out the difference, given the Lentils wonโ€™t yield at all where the CW is!
