I met Martha Shaw, 84, a year after she lost everything. This is her journey. When editors ask if you’d report a lengthy narrative to help 38 million readers better understand #climatechange, you do it. A special project for @aarp magazine. https://t.co/VYIKvAVEqT

As more older Americans move to the coasts, rising seas are wiping out their homes — and retirement dreams.

What a story. After 3 years on the transplant list, my friend woke in the hospital w/a new kidney. Then he learned a stranger saved his life—not as part of some larger organ swap, but because she could. Then they met. Read this. You'll be glad you did. https://t.co/mOzUiV7YPM

Altruistic kidney donations — when somebody gifts an organ to a stranger — are rare. This is the story of one that brought two local families together.

Sea stars—26 species—were dying by the *billions* from Mexico to Alaska, their arms tearing off, their bodies dissolving, w/enormous consequences. No one knew why. So we tagged along w/scientists unraveling the mystery. Can they be saved? Thanks for sharing, @Longreads!
"To raise sunflower stars in captivity and release them to the Pacific, however, scientists must first learn how to keep stars from dying. And for that, they must know what’s killing them in the first place." @CraigAWelch for @bioGraphic:

After a decade of carnage, we finally know what’s devastating sea stars along North America’s West Coast. Does that mean scientists can save them?

Statement by family of Chinese journalist Dong Yuyu after news of the verdict in his national security trial. This is sad news. The Dong’s are a wonderful family. Yuyu should not be subjected to 4.5 more years of prison on such insubstantial, false charges

Family Statement on Dong Yuyu’s Verdict and Sentencing 29 November 2024 (Issued by the Dong Family) Today’s verdict is a grave injustice not only to Yuyu and his family but also to every freethinking...

China sends a message to the world with this harsh sentencing — telling them that anyone engaging in people-to-people exchanges could be labeled a spy. Dong Yuyu, 62, was a respected journalist and @Harvard fellow doing ordinary meetings with diplomats and foreign journalists.
I condemn today's sentencing of veteran Chinese journalist Dong Yuyu to seven years in prison on espionage charges. Punishing Dong for exercising his freedom of speech and the press, guaranteed by the PRC’s constitution for all its citizens, is unjust.

Chinese journalist Dong Yuyu, a Harvard University fellow known for his observations about Chinese politics and economics, was sentenced to seven years in jail for espionage, according to his family, who rejected the charges as “patently absurd.”

Dong Yuyu’s conviction on espionage charges shows how the space for independent thought and open discussion in China has narrowed since Xi Jinping took power in 2012.

我谴责中国今天以间谍罪判中国新闻从业人员董郁玉七年徒刑。中国宪法保障其人民的言论自由,而董郁玉因为行使了自己的言论自由权而遭受惩罚是不公正的。

“These charges are patently absurd.” My @niemanfdn colleague, widely respected journalist Yuyu Dong, was sentenced tonight to 7 yrs in prison in China for “espionage.” Some of the evidence: He spoke with the Japanese ambassador to China.

On Thanksgiving, I'm thinking of people I know enduring hardships. One is Yuyu Dong, a journalist and @Harvard Nieman Fellow detained by China. I wrote about him in my book #AtTheEdgeOfEmpire. His family expects a verdict on Friday. His case is getting more attention in the US.
China just freed 3 American prisoners. But it is holding many Chinese citizens on unjust charges. Yuyu Dong, a former @Harvard Nieman fellow, is the most prominent journalist being detained in mainland China. How will the Trump administration handle this?

Exactly. This point about the necessary legwork of real news also applies to national outlets who write stories based on local outlets’ reporting and research without having the awareness or ethics to recognize where their content comes from.
Have to wonder if news “influencers” could exist without the MSM to provide their raw material, ie., the news. Their commentary depends on the legwork of the very news organizations they so often criticize.

Hawaii has more cesspools per capita than any other state. Lots of leaky septic tanks too. The untreated wastewater they release is killing the state's already fragile coral reefs, threatened by ocean warming. https://t.co/C2I5pag9rD

Now the biggest @hakaimagazine news of the week... In January, Hakai will join forces with @bioGraphic. This means more great environmental journalism focused on oceans, coasts, and biodiversity. But to get off the ground, we need your help and donations!
