Supreme Court ruling today against independent legislature theory is a huge win for Democrats. Last year, @daveweigel and I reported on why Dems and voting rights advocates feared it.
washingtonpost.com
Democrats made gains in governors' offices and state courts, hoping that would protect their redistricting efforts. But Republicans have benefitted from the conservative Supreme Court.

Correction. @SenBillCassidy today declared June 8 Seersucker Day this year. In any event, the point remains, Congress is always bringing the economy to the brink.

It's Seersucker Day in Congress. I wrote about its comeback in 2014. My lede then? "The economy is no longer careening toward the edge of a cliff at the hands of Congress. So with that pressure lifted, members can revisit a lighter time — literally."

GOP State Sen. Merv Riepe has become such a hero on the left for his vote that stopped an abortion ban in Nebraska that @RAYGUNshirts is selling blue T-shirts and tank tops that say “Hot Merv Summer” in bold, white type.

Nebraska state Sen. Merv Riepe’s vote blocking a near-total abortion ban reflects a growing realization among some GOP lawmakers that staking extreme positions on abortion might be out of step with...

A must read: Democrats reluctant about Biden 2024, but they see no other choice. @CleveWootson @sabrod123 @ColbyItkowitz @MerylKornfield @dylanewells spoke w/130 Dems in 5 states, showing a party accepting Biden as standard-bearer — but only reluctantly.
washingtonpost.com
They are lukewarm about picking Biden as their nominee, but many believe he may be the best hope of preventing a second Trump term and fighting extremism.

Today, the AR-15 is the best-selling rifle in the United States, industry figures indicate. About 1 in 20 U.S. adults — or roughly 16 million people — own at least one AR-15, according to polling data from The Washington Post and Ipsos.
washingtonpost.com
The AR-15 wasn’t supposed to be a best-seller. It's the result of a dramatic shift in American gun culture fueled by the firearms industry and its allies.

From a story I wrote in 2016 about mental health stigma: Likened by some to the gay rights movement, with its beginnings in personal revelation, the groundswell to lift the stigma connected with mental illness has had a multiplying effect accelerated by social media.

I used to write a lot about mental health stigma. It can't be overstated what a big deal it is for a politician like @SenFettermanPA to publicly disclose his depression. The illness is pervasive and indiscrimate and we still don't talk about it enough.

Two weeks ago I spent the day with @GovernorShapiro on his first full day in office. He genuinely believes he can break through bitter partisanship, and after talking to Ds and Rs in Harrisburg, he might be right.

Some Democrats see Shapiro’s success as a road map for the party nationally and name him among a new generation of young governors who could one day run for president.
