In January, a Manchester venue hosted an antisemitic hate preacher-who @TheSun has now shown had one of just 10 Twitter accounts followed by the Heaton Park Terrorist. @BridgewaterHall ignored requests to cancel him. THIS was @JewishMCR's awfully prophetic statement at the time.

On @BBCr4today now - the terrorist who attacked #ManchesterSynagogue may have claimed to be Muslim—but his actions stand in direct contradiction to the core teachings of #Islam, which holds every innocent life as sacred. #StandTogether #StopHate https://t.co/hF6HEVsibR

7/7 This gives the many of us acting in good faith towards this government from the start no pleasure at all. Since the moment this possible move was announced two months ago this episode has been a mess and a disgrace that won’t help the hostages or Palestinians in dire need

6/7 I said two months ago that Starmer’s Labour wouldn’t recover with many of the British Jews who backed him in 2024 if recognition happened while hostages remain in Gaza - and the reaction has made me even more sure of this.

5/7 All of this only adds to the reason for the government keeping its powder dry until, as its own manifesto said, recognition could be part of a negotiated process. Reversing decades of UK policy certainly seems to achieve nothing but it could also be so much worse.

4/7 2 - If elements of Hamas remain (as is widely expected), and they are successful in any future Palestinian elections (as the polls suggest they could be) how will Britain deal with a government that includes Hamas ministers? The UK is yet to comment on this possibility.

3/7 We’ve not heard this from the PM before and you can sense it may become a slogan in lead up to elections next year. If many Israeli and Diaspora Jews are concerned about the direction of travel now, they really fear another Bibi victory in 2026.

2/7 The move will strengthen far right voices like Smotrich and Ben Gvir.Early signs are it’ll also harden position of others who never really wanted two states including Netanyahu who today said there will ‘be no Palestinian state’ and boasted of having prevented one ‘for years’

1/7 Every word of this. But the results of this move might be even worse than @BenKentish suggests for a number of reasons:

The Palestinian people have every right to their own state. Everyone should recognise that. Regardless of what the current leadership in both Gaza and Israel says, a two-state solution is the *only* long-term solution. That said, randomly “recognising” a state that doesn’t
