TRAVEL BALL COACHES:
PLEASE STOP PINCH RUNNING FOR PITCHERS/CATCHERS. If they are going to hit in college they have to learn to run bases.
I cannot put someone in my lineup that does not know softball IQ running bases. They learn by doing it! Keep them in!
Mad respect to the recruits that call coaches to decline their offers versus recruits that ghost and you find out about their commitment on social media
You wanna play college softball? Are you just interested? Are you committed?
“There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in something, you do it only when it’s convenient. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results”
Excited for D1’s to start their season grind but let me remind y’all that plenty of D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO programs have already started our seasons. All of the collegiate softball world has been training since August and deserve recognition, even if we aren’t on ESPN every week
Travel Ball Coaches;
Please don’t pitch committed pitchers if you have the depth to not do so at showcases! Showcases are to get uncommitted kids seen and signed!
To me, the “WIN” in a showcase, is your kids getting visits and offers!
Talent is what gets you noticed by a college coach. Your character, attitude, and energy are what keeps us coming back to watch you. Make sure the second is just as important as the first.
Catchers: please please PLEASE give some love to your pitchers and work their low pitches UP into the zone and stop letting your wrist drag balls OUT of the zone. Work your thumb UNDER the ball!
If I receive an email from some form of recruiting service rather than your personal email I will most likely forward this to my junk.
I want to know that you’re interested in MY school not just sending out mass emails. Make your email personal and make sure we have your major!
When I recruit I’m looking for kids who love the game with everything inside of them
The game asks for so much & if you aren’t willing to give it 100% of you, it feels like you HAVE to play rather than GETTING to play
Appreciating the game > obligation to the game
If you’re not starting, work harder. If you aren’t getting the amount of playing time you want, make yourself so marketable to the coach they can’t overlook you.
Competition forces 2 things
1) drives complacent athletes to quit
2) drives good athletes to become better athletes
One of the things that I enjoyed most about this showcase this past weekend was seeing girls who just downright LOVED playing softball. They were having a blast on the field and it showed. That’s what it’s all about.
“Coach I would love to come to your camp but we have a tournament that weekend”
Can we please normalize missing a day of tournaments to attend a camp at a school you’re interested in?
OR
Reply “thanks for the invite but I’m not interested in your school”

Recruits: Please do research on my school before emailing me. If you say “I’m so eager to continue my education in your nursing program” I know you copied & pasted from other emails & this will go directly to my junk folder, regardless of your actual interest.

Dear Catchers,
Stop trying to frame balls that are 6 balls off the plate. The umpire knows it’s 3 feet off the plate and it’s a ball, and now he/she thinks you will frame every pitch and is less likely to call a close pitch that you DO frame well a strike.
Sincerely,
Coach Huff
Winning is hard.
Losing is hard.
Hitting .500 is hard.
Going 0-3 on the day is hard.
Being the best is hard.
Staying complacent with your talent is hard.
Everyday is a blessing to tackle the day and CHOOSE YOUR HARD. What are you going to choose?
If you don’t take warm ups or practice as serious & as intense as games, then that tells me you’re the type of athlete that shows up when it’s convenient.
You’ll be the athlete in college that goes through the motions and doesn’t compete at practice.
Dear catchers,
Work UP THROUGH the zone on low pitches such as change ups and drop balls. This eliminates dragging a strike out of the strike zone for your pitchers.
That’s it.
Sincerely,
Coach Huff
The game does not care what you look like, what size you are, who you know, or what your personality is.
The game DOES care what you are willing to sacrifice, how much you pour into it, and your commitment.
Coaches: try to remember that competing is one of the athletes favorite part of the game/day. Make sure they leave the field feeling that same way.
I can assure you when they make a mistake/error, they know it before you yell at them.
Accountability does not equal degrading.
One of my favorite drills that I took from Tip Tuesday from the NFCA for my team (Hoosier Scramble from
@IndianaSB
).
Works on:
•secondary plays
•base running
•tag plays and proper receiving
•communication
•inducing pressure on your defense
•quick transfers
Unpopular Opinion:
Every coach has their favorites—mine?
The kids that show up everyday with ruthless work ethic, gritty mentality, swagger, wanting to learn and improve every single day, the best dang attitude and the mentality “I GET to be here.”
Game (scrimmage) Day and a W is a good reason to finally announce my new job!!
I accepted the Head Coach position at D2 Converse University in Spartanburg SC. I’m so excited for this opportunity and to hit the ground running with Team 7!

If you want to compete at a high level and be successful, you have to be intrinsically motivated. It cannot be extrinsic motivation that pushes you everyday. You have to find what inside you pushes you to make sacrifices and be truly dedicated to the success you seek.
Man what an amazing way to start Day 3 of the
@NFCAorg
Convention hearing from these amazing women
@GassoPatty
@CoachDot_LU
at the FCA Breakfast.
Thank you for your testimony, leadership and using our platform to glorify our Lord!
We have 10!!!! commits for the 2022 class with a possible few more to add. Exciting things are happening in the development for the
@ValkyriesSB
program 🥳
I love when I’m talking to people and refer to my team as “my kids” and they say “Oh, wow I didn’t know you had children?”
To which I always have to reply “Oh yeah. I have 20 basically”
Opening twitter this morning and my heart is sad, it is broken, and it is aching for the friends and family of Sophie Mazgay. My sincerest thoughts and prayers are with all that love her, know her, and appreciate her 🧡🖤
Every time I ask my pitcher
@hilsss23
“How is your arm feeling?” she always gives me the same response. Last time I said “I need that on a T-shirt Hil”
Guess what was delivered to my office today 😂
While everyone is excited for Christmas, please remember those that have lost someone they love. Holidays are another reminder of them being gone, and the empty chair Christmas morning. Sending love to everyone spending the holidays without one of their loved ones ❤️
My favorite question I get asked when talking to people about my team (I refer to them as my kiddos or my girls) i.e “I gotta take the kiddos to dinner” and they ask “oh so you have kids?”
“Well I don’t but I kind of do have 15”
I know I’m not the only coach this happens to 😂
While everyone is excited for Christmas, please remember those that have lost someone they love. Holidays are another reminder of who they have lost being gone & the empty chair on Christmas. Sending hugs to those spending the holidays w/out one of their loved ones this season 🎄
My heart gets so happy seeing all the young softball dreams come true with announcements of signing!!
HOWEVER: if you are not signing today, that’s okay too!! Take your recruiting at a pace that you feel comfortable with. Keep grinding and you will find your fit 😎
Recruits: if a coach spends time coming to watch you, hosts you for a visit, & continually pursues you, have enough common courtesy to let them know you’ve committed somewhere so 1) they can move on with their recruiting
2) they don’t see it on social media and be blindsided
Team 8 had the privilege of being buddies for
@miracleleague12
League Opening Night! We had SO much fun & can’t wait to be back in October for Trunk or Treat with our dance moves 💃🏻💜
Y’all this Florida humidity is insane but so is this talent at the
@BackwardsKJax
tournament in Newberry,
Florida! If you’re playing send me your schedule 🥎
Yall , I’m ALL about being competitive during sports & chatter from fans/dugouts. I LOVE it—it’s what makes sports FUN. But, when fans start degrading & putting down my players I have a BIG issue with that
You can be supportive AND cheer for ur team w/out putting my girls down
Your daily reminder:
You are STRONG.
You are BEAUTIFUL.
You are SMART.
You are KIND.
You are IMPORTANT.
You are INSPIRING.
You are BRAVE.
You are SUCCESSFUL.
You are WORTHY.
You are ENOUGH.
Some things I’ve learned in my first year of coaching a full college season (thx Covid):
My house feels more like a hotel than my home, my fridge is always empty, and my laundry is always full 😅
The 2 major reasons I’ve seen great swings result in poor performance in games:
1) pitch selection
2) timing
These 2 things are just as important (if not more important) to train as the mechanics of your swing.
Set yourself up for success!
