Labour & Co-op councillor for Kursaal ward, Southend City Council. Never knowingly on message. All views my own.

Like, I'm assuming all councillors in England at least, I've today received an email from a Cllr James Giles, basically demanding that I sign a letter to Sunak, Starmer and all MPs calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
To be clear, I won't be signing it.
@nadhimzahawi
Mate, you've been running the country for *12 years*. The mess we're in is all your own work, and coming up with conspiracies to blame Labour just makes you look unhinged.
@nadhimzahawi
a) The RMT isn't affiliated to Labour.
b) Threatening to sack public sector workers isn't going to repair 13 years of damage to public services caused by Tory government.
c) Why aren't you in jail for non-payment of taxes?
@supertanskiii
I cannot fathom what would possess a politician, much less one representing my city, to take a photo like this. Much less to publish it.
Shameful.
Owen Jones complaining about someone instigating a pile-on is the peak of audacity.
Especially when he's making these claims to defend someone who was being homophobic.
I don't think the Green Party set out to create a target list for potential attacks, but that's what they've done.
In 2016 Jo Cox was murdered in her constituency. In 2021 Sir David Amess was murdered in my own city.
Yet in 2023 we're still not taking MP's safety seriously.
Last night Parliament had the opportunity to vote to support a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza.
Sadly, the Labour party is in chaos and is failing to deliver what constituents are demanding.
Is your MP on the list?

This video piece by BBC News yesterday, with

@SouthendFoodBan
lays bare the real impact of the cost of living crisis on ordinary people in this country.
It should be required viewing.
Regardless of the subject, the email says people can sign it anonymously but anyone who fails to sign it will be publicly named.
.
To my mind this is blackmail and a threat to councillors' safety, which given the murder of David Amess seems especially reckless.
CNN is currently doing a panel discussion about if Biden should invite Trump to the Queen's funeral. Jake Tapper says it would be "clever" for Biden to do it.
@OwenJones84
@wesstreeting
The guy was threatening to weaponise homophobia against a gay MP. Whether he himself was gay is irrelevant - in fact, I think it makes it worse.
@JulianSmithUK
This is entirely the fault of the Prime Minister. If you haven't already submitted a letter of no confidence to the 1922 Committee, please draft one tonight.
WARNING: If you receive a text asking you to become the new Chancellor of the Exchequer, please do not open it.
It is a scam.
If you open it, you will become the new Chancellor of the Exchequer.
@RishiSunak
Leaving aside the vaguery of these pledges, all of these messes have happened *on your watch*. You want applause for *saying* you'll deal with them, but refuse any accountability for allowing them to happen.
@KEdge23
@Keir_Starmer
There was a clearly exception for reasonanbly necessary work. Starmer was having food and drink at work, with people he was working with. The police have now investigated it twice and found no case to answer.
Give it a rest. Go have a beer and a curry.
@linda_holden767
@jessphillips
Is it? The Conservative's whips office have twice now employed a man who has twice had to resign because of sexual misconduct. I think Jess' offer is quite generous and certainly needed.
@KEdge23
@Keir_Starmer
Gone home? What, just walked down the road from Durham to London? Give over.
I know you've had a dreadful week. Your hero Boris has had to face consequences, and those are only supposed to be for people who aren't Tories. But really, suck it up and stop having a tantrum.
@JakeBerry
Your party has been in government for 13 years now, Jake. Absolutely mystifying that you think you're somehow not the establishment.
Straight up delusional.
@JamesDuddridge
@RishiSunak
James, you really don't have to jump on every passing bandwagon. Genuinely, the second hand embarrassment at you continually calling it wrong is getting a bit much.
Hey lads, maybe if Corbyn and co hadn't handed Johnson an 80 seat majority through sheer incompetence, today wouldn't have been a choice between a shit deal Brexit and a no deal Brexit?
Just a thought.
It's a massive shame that Diane Abbott's career is ending in this way, but she can't simply expect there to be no consequences to her writing a public letter to the Observer claiming that Jews and Travellers don't experience racism.
She's brought this on herself.
As a Black woman, and someone on the left of the Labour Party, I have unfortunately been forced to reach the conclusion that I will not get a fair hearing from this Labour leadership.
Earlier today I tweeted a disparaging comment about
@GeorgeGalloway
. Whilst I'm no fan of his politics, my language was inappropriate and fell below the standards expected of a Southend councillor. I've deleted the tweet, and apologise to Mr Galloway and anyone offended.
@andreajenkyns
@BorisJohnson
And all of that makes lawbreaking okay in your mind?
Proof positive that the rot doesn't end with the PM, but runs through your entire party.
@_BillieBelieves
@ShaunBaileyUK
Why are so many men like this? Why can they only relate to women via the women in their lives, rather than, y'know, as human beings?
Andrea Jenkyns, a Johnson loyalist, shouts at the booing crowds:
“He who laughs last, laughs the loudest. Wait and see!”
What does Boris Johnson’s inner circle have planned?
The fact that Keir Starmer can shrug off being glitter bombed by a protester, and continue with his speech unshaken, does him no harm at all.
Exactly the character that we need in Number 10. And he looks strangely good with glitter
#Lab23
Starmer was incredibly clear that there was no place in the Labour Party for anyone minimising the extent of the antisemitism problem.
Corbyn's first response to the EHRC report was to minimise the antisemitism problem in the Labour Party.
What did he expect to happen?
If Labour wants to avoid this then they can simply restore the whip to the former party leader like grown ups. They have behaved dishonourably and now want to complain that there might be consequences
@DavidEvennettMP
@JamesDuddridge
@Keir_Starmer
So given that you both, David and James, see honesty and accuracy from MPs in parliament as being important, I take it you'll be voting for the Prime Minister to be investigated by the Standards Committee tomorrow?
@supertanskiii
We need more people like Brown. He didn't care about being adored. He cared about doing the right thing.
We didn't deserve Gordon, and we still don't.
@sajidjavid
@Keir_Starmer
@DavidLammy
You're disgusted? There's no place for it?
Prove it. This was driven by the PM repeating untrue, far-right smears against Keir Starmer at the dispatch box. He's not fit for office.
Resign from his cabinet and submit your letter to the 1922 Committee. Or your words mean nothing.
@BorisJohnson
"All forms of harassment"? Who's advising you, Jeremy Corbyn?
Just apologise. You knowingly lied about Keir Starmer, and this specific harassment is your fault.
Apologise, and then resign.
@christiancalgie
Now, if RLB had been sacked the prior week for breaking the ministerial code and endangering national security, you *might* have a point.
But she didn't.
So you don't.
@IainDale
@LBC
I genuinely wonder if Maajid is alright. He seems to have fallen down an absolutely insane rabbit hole in the last few years. I can remember when he was pretty sound.
Azhar Ali has no business in parliament, spouting his ridiculous antisemitic conspiracy theories in the House of Commons. It's too late to take him off the ballot, but he should be suspended immediately.
@ukhomeoffice
Whether she sympathised isn't in issue, is it? Ms Braverman still told a Holocaust survivor that she was unwilling to apologise for using the sort of dehumanising language about refugees which the Nazis used about the Jews. Which is a shameful and indefensible position.
This is the same PM who repeated an untrue, far-right smear against Keir Starmer and refused to apologise.
Johnson is dishonest to his core, utterly untrustworthy, and unfit for office. That's not "personal abuse". It's the truth.
Tonight, Southend Council unanimously backed my motion on securing a future for Southend United Football Club.
In addition to the resolutions set out, an amendment was moved to call a special council to consider Council investment in the club if that would make the difference.
It's frustrating not to be able to share details, but I hear there's news not too far off on Southend United.
There's been *a lot* of activity going on behind the scenes. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and holding my breath, but keep your eyes on the news over the next few days.
LABOUR PARTY: "If you do the thing, you're going to be suspended."
BRISTOL WEST OFFICERS: *does the thing*
LABOUR PARTY: *suspends them*

@simonharris_mbd
Happy to join you on the record, under my own name, in stating that Lee Anderson is an out of touch embarrassment who deserves to be turfed out of Parliament at the earliest opportunity.
I'm seeing a lot of people (who would identify themselves as on the left) who previously were very much in favour of of young people getting more involved in politics, now seemingly adding the caveat only if said young people's politics align exactly with their own.
@BBCSangita
@BBCNews
I'm so sorry to hear this, Sangita. Unacceptable behaviour, and not the impression I want to see people getting of my town. These thugs are not and do not speak for Southend. I hope you and your team are alright.
@MartinPCostello
@RobertJenrick
Because they spend a substantial amount of money to Arsenal FC for them to do so?
It would be quite weird if foreign policy were determined by the sponsors of football teams.
Gone for lunch, and have accidentally ended up in a restaurant hosting a Stand Up For Racism event. Currently listening to some loon spew out antisemitic George Soros conspiracy theories 🤮🤮🤮
Utterly disgusting that these people feel comfortable adjacent to

Keir Starmer is in the Sun saying that refugees crossing the Channel is akin to terrorism
I’m proud instead

is fighting for a fairer and kinder asylum process
@JamesDuddridge
History will remember the lies, the arrogance, the broken laws and broken promises.
And it'll remember that you defended him over the people you're elected to represent.
@paulwaugh
Take the seat loss. One seat is worth it to not have Banquo sitting at the feast every day. And everyone knows Johnson wouldn't bother to turn up at the Lords once ennobled.
Interesting to hear Rishi Sunak insisting again and again that it was his job as chancellor to scrutinise the value for money of the Rwanda plan.
It's a shame he didn't apply the same scrutiny to the billions of wasted money in COVID grants to Tory donors, eh?
#bbclaurak
@novaramedia
@harriepw
To be honest, I'm not at all convinced it's a bad thing for Labour to be swapping out those who only cared about a cult of personality around one man for others who actually want to see a Labour government with Labour values enacting Labour policies.
@willquince
@BorisJohnson
And all of that makes lawbreaking okay in your mind?
Proof positive that the rot doesn't end with the PM, but runs through your entire party.
@supertanskiii
Absolutely. And when energy companies go bust, rather than paying other companies to take on their customers, THEN take them into public ownership and provide a state-owned competitor to the private energy providers.
@SteveBarclay
Those scenes are a direct result of the PM repeating shameful lies about Keir Starmer at the dispatch box.
If you really believed MP should not be threatened and harassed, you'd resign from his cabinet and office, and submit a letter of no confidence to the 1922 Committee.

Leaving aside that this strike isn't about train drivers and that it's really weird to hope someone ends up on the dole, if the rail industry "goes bust" it won't just be train drivers who are in trouble. Do you have any idea how many people rely on the rail network every day?
