Although the bilateral deals it has struck with European neighbours are a key element of the United Kingdom's post-Brexit diplomacy, it would be a mistake to view these understandings as evidence...

How does @Keir_Starmer approach bilateral relations with 🇪🇺 member states since becoming 🇬🇧 PM @10DowningStreet? How is it different to predecessors? Turns out Starmer is 'a good diplomat', but that quality has not endeared him to the British electorate 👇 https://t.co/pAosEl6SyC

Barely two weeks go by without a bilateral meeting between Keir Starmer and a leader from a European capital. He hosted his Irish and Spanish counterparts in Downing Street on 12 September…

📣👇my piece @EncompassEurope on Starmer’s approach to bilateralism with 🇪🇺 member states. He is much better at it than his recent predecessors … BUT ‘Starmer may have proven himself a good diplomat, but so far, this is not a quality that has endeared him to the British public.’

👇👌 on some external implications, especially for 🇪🇺, of political instability in 🇫🇷. In terms of political optics of nominating Lecornu, leaves Macron very exposed to direct attacks on his legitimacy, as new PM is very close & loyal to Macron + has low pol profile in 🇫🇷
With my colleagues at @gmfus we analyse what the fall of the Bayrou government — and the appointment of Lecornu as the new PM — mean for France’s domestic and international politics. Spoiler: problems aren’t going away:

The women’s games have been great @rolandgarros and continue to be great battles
Maybe @rolandgarros fans will realise that many of the women's matches they disdain are much more interesting than watching the rapid march of Sinner and Alcaraz to what should admittedly be a cracking final if they get there..

👇👇 an impressive list of participants once again @EPC_CPE_News 👉 https://t.co/LPbPQG68HB - European Political Community still an attractive (relevant 🤔) forum
Today, European leaders meet in Albania for the EPC summit 🤝 @CleoDavies2 & @MonikaMeislova argue that while it is a good opportunity for leaders to meet regularly, the EPC lacks shared expectations about its purpose and substantive outcomes. https://t.co/whNqJ3AY49

Celebrating 🇬🇧-France relations in July 👇 the Summit is the second since Brexit after Sunak & Macron March 2023 summit. Implementation of what was agreed then has been successful and both countries will look to deepen cooperation further, notably on defence & security
Delighted about President @EmmanuelMacron and Mrs Brigitte Macron's State Visit to the UK in July on the invitation of Their Majesties The King and Queen, & the 37th 🇫🇷🇬🇧 Summit with @Keir_Starmer. A moment that will testify to the deep ties uniting our two countries and peoples.

I’m hugely grateful to @paulwaugh for writing this letter and to all the parliamentarians for their support. I’m hugely proud of the excellent work @UKandEU has done and continues to do.
.@UKandEU has for years produced high quality research on the UK's links with the EU. Yet it now faces closure because of @ESRC grant cuts. Some 66 of us Parliamentarians (38 MPs and 28 peers) have signed a cross-party letter urging @UKRI_News to reconsider their decision.

For the first time in its history, we could be looking at a genuinely rightwing European Union. Europe’s centrist majority that has governed the continent is over. My latest for @guardian #vonderleyen

Indeed. But beyond the 🇬🇧🇫🇷 relationship, Macron will have wanted to symbolically display Europe’s military power… and he loves pomp and an ostentatious display of his incarnation of ‘la Présidence de la Republique’.
Macron has gone out of his way to signal the importance of the 🇬🇧🇫🇷relationship on this Remembrance Day. The drive up the Champs Élysée in a command jeep is very unusual.
