An honour to present @MHNRconf explaining the importance of MH nursing identity in the pre-reg syllabus. Three key themes (1) a shift towards generic nurse education (2) uniqueness of MH nursing (3) impact on service uses https://t.co/K6EfLyxidr

Very worrying. Possibly due to the stress of the job as well as feeling undervalued by society through poor pay. Certainly emphasises the need for mental health nurses to have specialist training, to look after themselves, and to care for other nurses in need. #MHDeservesBetter
Nurses reporting 'suicidal thoughts has increased by 98% over the first 10 months of this year'. RCN Interim head of nursing practice @SWJ_1 adds that "in October 2022 we had one caller a week disclosing suicidal thoughts. But, in 2023 it works out as almost one a day."

Here at @UCLanMH @UCLanNursing we are developing a new pre reg nursing curriculum. Here are 2 of many field specific modules designed to build MH nurse identity, alongside MH specific skills. @Tylerify_This @traceyrogers37 @dirob29 @mickmckeown2016 @mbhaslam @Chris_RMN
There will be a real focus on the development of a strong sense of professional identity in the new curriculum, both as a nurse and a nurse within your chosen field of practice!! #ProudToBeANurse @UCLan

"Perhaps, one day, better education and reflective values can end the perpetual cycle of incidents of poor practice". Great editorial published today. Yet, better education can only come if @nmcnews begin to promote and protect #MentalHealth nursing.

https://t.co/SFsin3yFLr celebrating over 1000 downloads of my paper. It makes the lessons I learned when I became a service user somewhat worthwhile. I went from MH nurse to MH patient virtually overnight. This changed my perspective on what is really important to service users

We stand in solidarity with all fields of nursing who feel their specialist education is being eroded. We have published our open letter, CYP nursing raised concerns, and now LD nursing too. When will this be taken seriously @nmcnews? #MHDeservesBetter

"120,273 adults in England with severe mental illness ...died before the age of 75...2 in 3 were potentially preventable...mortality gap between those living with severe mental illness and the rest of the population is widening" #mentalhealthawarenessweek2023 #MHDeservesBetter
Over 26,000 adults with severe mental illness die prematurely each year from preventable physical illnesses. We're calling on the Govt to close the mortality gap & provide full annual health checks to everyone with a severe mental illness. Read more: https://t.co/pGOBE0R7hL

A reminder on #InternationalNursesDay that whilst #MentalHealth nurses are part of the nursing family, we have a unique role which needs to be respected with specialist pre-registration education. We eagerly await a response to our open letter from @nmcnews. #MHDeservesBetter

"We despair at the dilution of field-specific content already caused by the Nursing and Midwifery Councilās generically driven future nurse standards". We are pleased to see CYP Nursing colleagues write about the need for specialist education, and we hope @nmcnews read it.

I am proud of this article, because it was written honestly and from the heart, so I am pleased to see it be #TopDownloadedArticle in @JPMHNursing. Read about some of the challenges in having theory make its way into clinical practice. Article here: https://t.co/CgjovpiYBD

@NurseStandard I can't fathom why it would genuinely ever matter to a persons quality of care, but I know there are outdated attitudes around professionalism which were perhaps quite robotic and sought the 'untainted' uniformity of staff. I have a tattoo and there were never any issues for me.

Really happy to see our CYP colleagues making the argument to protect their specialism.
What do our peers in CYP Nursing think? For #MentalHealth Nursing, increasing genericism in pre-reg education (framed as holism yet undountedly adult-centric) has been a disaster, and led to resistence through #MHDeservesBetter. @CYPNAUK @CYPStNN @WeNurses #WeNurseAcademics
