20 years ago, ESPN aired Playmakers, a scripted drama about a football team with drug issues, domestic violence and homophobia.
It was a massive hit, but the NFL hated it, so it was canceled.
Here's the definitive story of what happened to Playmakers:
With a toss of 12 feet, six inches, Iowa redshirt freshman offensive lineman Gennings Dunker (Lena, Ill.) wins the 20th Annual Hay Bale Toss at Solon Beef Days in Solon, Iowa.

Pat McAfee got Brady Quinn's Sister's jersey from the 2006 Fiesta Bowl for his show at Notre Dame today.
AJ Hawk says his mother-in-law had it in storage for 20 years. What a pull!
Remember: If Elijah Moore doesn't fake pee in the 2019 Egg Bowl, Ole Miss maybe wins that game, Joe Moorhead gets fired earlier, Joe Judge maybe gets the Miss St. job and the Giants swing harder to hire Matt Rhule.
Everything in football comes back to this.
Patrick Mahomes says on ESPN that the Chiefs would have deferred/kicked if they won the toss in overtime. So they’d know what they needed.
“We changed the rules, we can execute them both ways. I don’t know how they’re going to change it this time.”
Local TV reporter on the XFL Arlington Renegades: "I think people are excited to have a team in Arlington that actually plays football in February."
💀💀💀
You can't say TCU didn't deserve to be here when they literally beat the undefeated No. 2 team to get here. Sometimes you just get your ass kicked by a much better team.
Oakland is a commuter school in suburban Detroit that became a Division I program in 1999.
Kentucky is the winningest program in Division I history.
Unbelievable.
Max Duggan entered the room with red eyes and sniffles. Fighting back tears.
“If we got in (the CFP), we’d give a heck of a fight. I don’t know. I wanted that one really bad.”
“There’s nothing I wanted more than to get this school a championship.”
Watching this Oregon-Washington game and realizing the bottom third of the Big Ten will never have a chance again.
Conference realignment is going to be brutal for a lot of teams who will come to regret it.
I feel bad for Will Levis because his entire "slide" is a result of the NFL Draft Machine. Nobody who watched him regularly in college thought he would go near the top of the draft.
devastated. heartbroken. In so much disbelief rn, I wish my leg broke earlier in the season so y’all could see this team is much more than the quarterback. I thought results matter. 13-0 and this roster matches up across any team in those top 4 rankings. I am so sorry. Go Noles!

The rule should be, if a city loses a pro sports team but gets a new one, that new team gets the lore.
Houston Texans get the Oilers throwback, not the Titans. Minnesota Wild get the North Stars, not Dallas.
Nick Saban's radio show is the purest thing left in college football.
Makes $11 million annually, greatest coach of all time, and he comes here every Thursday to take offensive line criticism from a man named Peewee.
"So I wanted to ask you, 'What the hell is going on?'"
- Coach Saban during epic rant on Hey Coach while taking call from Peewee

Jim Harbaugh on paying college athletes: “The billions that are being generated, they’re not getting much of.”
Suggests everyone profiting off college athletes, himself included, should take a 5-10% pay cut and put it toward the players.
Dan Campbell has never been a coordinator in his coaching career.
Yes he had an interim HC stint, but as we go through another coaching carousel, remember that calling good plays doesn't make a head coach.
Being a head coach is about organizing and leading people.
If you're wondering why Liberty got in because they "kept winning their games" and Florida State got left out after winning its games, I got nothing for ya.
Kirk Herbstreit not making a pick on the game he's calling remains one of the last bastions of objective journalism.
McAfee: "I think you are allowed, you just choose not to."
Herbstreit: "No, they tell me I'm not allowed to."

never trailed. They broke the record for goals. They beat the second-, third- and fourth-place teams, along with the host/favorite. Legendary run.
The most fascinating college football game of the year might be Albany at Hawaii.
Among the longest travel ever for a game within the United States, and it's kicking off at midnight Albany time.
The clearest sign the CFP committee doesn't act consistently was putting Florida State between Alabama and Georgia.
You think the current FSU team is worse than Alabama but better than Georgia? Does anyone REALLY believe that distinction?
I've become a NCAA Tournament contractionist. Go back to 64. Or at least make the First Four completely out of at-large teams.
The small-conference 16-seed AQs should get to experience the real NCAA Tournament.
"What A Pro Wants" with Chet Holmgren and SGA is among the worst NCAAT commercials we've ever had.
We used to have Scoop There It Is.
We used to have Napa Know How.
It used to be better.
Ohio State got inside Clemson's 25-yard line 5 times: 3 field goals, 1 TD, 1 INT.
We can talk about the officiating, but Ohio State blew its chances and let Clemson go 94 yards for the winning TD and that was the difference.
Jim Harbaugh racing through the airport, running from Tony Petitti, who reaches the plane and finds a man in a Michigan hat, but it’s not Harbaugh. He looks out the window into another plane, where Harbaugh is waving goodbye as the plane takes off. [credits roll]
Jim Harbaugh’s attorney, Tom Mars, tells ESPN he fully expects Jim Harbaugh to fly with the team to Penn State. “I’m confident he’s going to be on that plane one way or another," Mars said.
Since the Pac-12 fell apart last summer, it was the best football conference in the fall, reached the CFP title game and it's now 5-0 in the NCAA men's tournament.
Sigh. Sad that college sports continues to rip itself apart.
Caitlin Clark talks a lot of trash and didn't care that Angel Reese dished it back to her.
This isn't a Thing. You don't need to pretend it's a Thing. It's all fine!
8 of the 32 teams left in the NCAA Tournament are double-digit seeds
10. Colorado
11. Duquesne
11. NC State
11. Oregon
12. JMU
12. Grand Canyon
13. Yale
14. Oakland
All 1s and 2s won, three 3s won, three 4s won.
Travis Kelce was noticeably absent during Taylor Swift's 34th birthday celebration in New York City, but for a good reason.
A source tells ET that he "remains committed to playing his best and doing his best on and off the field. The team practices are critical, mandatory to…
Washington QB Will Rogers has re-entered the portal as a grad transfer,
@TheAthletic
has learned.
The Mississippi State transfer is back on the market after HC Kalen DeBoer left for Alabama. SEC's all-time leader in pass attempts and completions.
The way Duke's Mayo handles the bowl game should be the model for all bowl sponsors.
Brand awareness goes way up, it's a fun vibe, and it's a product viewers can actually buy. This makes way more sense than logistics companies buying a name and a commercial.
Whenever I see Duquesne, I think about how they cut the baseball program in 2010 and Miguel Cabrera bought a ton of leftover Duquesne baseball shirts because it was the Old English D logo and he always wore them under his Tigers jersey.
You can argue about amateurism or politics or whatever. It's really not about any of that.
The reason CFB is on the brink is because of the virus. Most of the world got it under control. We didn't.
Kirk Herbstreit on SportsCenter:
“I hate losing the tradition of the sport. I’ve always been, I guess, naive to it. I’ve tried to be the guy who thinks people care about tradition and rivalries. Clearly, the decision-makers don’t. It’s an arms race and it’s about the money."
The joy of college football isn't Alabama and Georgia curb-stomping everyone.
It's the Houston-UTSA game. It's App State-UNC. It's Pitt-West Virginia. What a Week 1 of classics.
So Colorado ended up having the season most of us expected.
Get destroyed on the lines, Shedeur gets banged up, Buffs get everyone's best shot, won't be bowling in a tough P12.
Still a big improvement from last year, but the nature of the TCU game warped everything.
