One-third of Chicagoans can't afford cost of living Over the last 10 years: 🏘️ Housing costs ⬆️ 45% 🥕 Grocery costs ⬆️ 28% We MUST build more housing
About one in four people in the Chicago area already face food insecurity. Rising grocery and rent costs are mostly to blame, according to a new report. Federal SNAP benefits for food are set to be cut next year. https://t.co/fZB3dUVQli

Many cities with declining apartment production have inclusionary zoning, and the ones that are increasing do not.
Here are the 20 metro areas with the greatest increase and decrease in apartment construction from 2024 to 2025. A lot of red Southern cities in the green, but Chicago, Madison, MSP, Portland, San Jose, San Francisco all in the top 10 for greatest declines.

This is a disaster for Chicago on so many levels, and yet, I'm still going to attend so many community meetings this year full of people complaining that Chicago is building too much new housing.

The most frustrating part is how our leaders could easily prevent a housing crisis while also promoting the urbanism Chicago is known for: - Citywide upzoning (4 flats by right) - Permit fast-tracking - Single-stair reform - Elevator reform - Develop CDOT land near transit

My latest for @CityLab Parking reform might be the rare issue that Chicagoans can agree on

As part of Mayor Brandon Johnson’s efforts to eliminate zoning rules that block new home construction, the city joins a national parking policy reform movement.

Thank you to everyone who joined our Opportunity Through Urbanism Town Hall with @ChiGrowthProj and @JATompkins for a robust conversation about how denser housing and modernized transit can reshape Illinois for generations to come. We need to plan our cities for people—not cars.

the point of courtyard urbanism is that Americans can have their cake and eat it, too. They get the big house with a (court)yard AND all the amenities and conveniences of a dense, walkable neighborhood.
@UrbanCourtyard @StatisticUrban You have to convince Americans to leave their big, cozy house for shoe box sized apartments

100 years ago today, the Chicago Tribune published a letter from a reader that had been written a few days before. Amen. Still holds today.

@FrankCalabrese Huh, would you look at that. It's almost like this whole selection process is just cover so they can put whoever they want in office. At least it's all being done to replace his political allies who he gave higher profile, higher paying jobs to. Just doing the people's work.

Chicago is the only large city in America where the mayor can unilaterally appoint council replacements. Regardless of who is mayor, this will continue to happen until we fix it through reform.
Mayor Brandon Johnson changes the rules for Chicago Aldermen replacements: requiring government experience in the 35th Ward (favoring Anthony Quezada) but removing that criteria in the 27th Ward, to benefit Red Burnett, son of Ald. Walter Burnett, who has no such experience. 😅

The concept of community engagement sounds like a great idea, until the city schedules THREE public meetings in one week for your neighborhood. This happened last month in Lakeview. I want to spend evenings playing volleyball or cooking with my fiancée. Not arguing with NIMBYs!
