BREAKING: "Slitty eyes", "hooked nose", "hijab", & "double chin" are all included as "face metadata" in the latest @ONVIF security camera standards. Co-authors of the section: Hikvision and @Sony . via @ipvideo

Interesting. Hikvision was excluded from a major CCTV tender for Brazil's Sao Paolo airport because it was unable or unwilling to issue a declaration promising not to share data generated by the cameras. Great reporting from @ipvideo 's @RobtWrenGordon

I have yet to see any statement condemning the widespread use of Uyghur-detecting face analytics in China from the #AIEthics or #MachineLearning communities - in fact, the companies behind this kind of software remain welcome at prestigious international #AI conferences

stop for a moment and think about the fact that the world's two largest security camera manufacturers ( @HikvisionHQ and @DahuaHQ ) provide Uyghur detection software that Chinese police use to track, surveil, & round up members of an entire ethnic group.

Excellent point. Westerners are freaking out about (totally hypothetical) AI use cases like AGI & killer robots while the PRC government has been deploying AI-powered alarms for Uyghurs, protestors, & dissidents for years

It’s kind of amazing that only in the past few months have Westerners started freaking out about AI when it has been used for years in China to upgrade and enforce totalitarianism Like: yep, that’s what it’s good for!

What does it mean to be a "private" firm in the PRC? Dahua, world's 2nd largest security cam maker, is private. It just posted a video that's "really over-the-top in demonstrating a private company’s total & unconditional fealty to the party and state"

Dahua won hundreds of millions of dollars of PRC police surveillance projects in #Xinjiang , resulting in the firm getting blacklisted by the US government for human rights abuses . @Amazon is now paying them $10 million for their fever detection cameras

Exclusive: China’s Zhejiang Dahua Technology shipped 1,500 cameras to Amazon this month in a deal valued close to $10 million. At least 500 systems from Dahua - a blacklisted firm - are for Amazon’s use in the U.S. by @readkrystalhu & @JLDastin

PRC state media is on overdrive sharing Peng Shuai videos and @TwitterComms appears to have no policy on forced confessions/is happy to allow its platform for this sort of stuff to spread

. @Twitter you need to kick Hu Xijin off Twitter and you need to do it now. Do you understand what your platform is being used for here?
