Symbiont-housing structures are rarely studied in unicellular protists. Jerlström-Hultqvist et al. show that low-oxygen-adapted Anaeramoebae have symbiosomes positioning sulfate-reducing bacteria near hydrogenosomes. @jon_hultqvist @andrewjroger https://t.co/RatjQBckFp

#Protists double animal's biomass on earth. Despite their importance, our knowledge of these organisms is greatly hampered by the limited number of stable laboratory cultures. Read our call to action "The protist cultural renaissance" in @TrendsMicrobiol

Desulfobacter-related symbionts were found to be associated w Anaeramoebae enclosed in membrane invaginations and exposed to the outer environment (Jerlström-Hultqvist et al. 2023). We describe two distinct types of symbioses with prokaryotes previously unknown from Anaeramoebae.

Anaeramoeba species are anaerobes living in anoxic, marine sediments and their mitochondria have been transformed into hydrogen-producing mitochondrion-related organelles (MROs), which form a cluster with symbiotic prokaryotes in the cytoplasm.
