Today marks the 79th anniversary of the end of World War II in Western Europe. WWII claimed the lives of over 60 million people, making it the deadliest military conflict in history. #VictoryDay

The nice thing with getting a Spinoza prize is that you get a statue which makes a good counterpart with another hero, much less philosophical but fairly good at pursuing empirical field work. Hard to decide who is the more surprised by the encounter...

Back to Randolph Bourne… the key shift from pandemic to war is that the government loses control to a violent reality where the state once again becomes the main actor. As a pacifist, anarchist and seeing the EU militarising, I am not sleeping easy. Europe is dangerously adrift.

If we are all going to be destroyed... let that find us doing sensible and human things - praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint - not huddled together like frightened sheep...

CS Lewis in 1948 reflected on atomic threat wrote: “For it is part of our spiritual law never to put survival first... [Survival] is not worth having unless it can be had by honourable and merciful means.” ... very much relevant in the time of #coronavirus
