There would never have been a good time for Brexit. But the decade of Trump and Putin was a particularly dangerous time for leaping off that particular cliff.

The goal of European “strategic autonomy” is a noble one. If the Europeans do enough over the coming years to make this autonomy a reality, then that will perhaps justify all their current sycophancy towards Donald Trump.
@APHClarkson The question is what Europe is doing to make itself less dependent in future on the whims of this or succeeding American Presidents. There is a perfectly legitimate debate about whether Europe is now doing enough or not to bring this about. Those who live longest will know most.

For what it’s worth I think it very unlikely and indeed undesirable that the UK could retain most of its numerous opt-outs when rejoining.
@JulienHoez The question whether the UK should hold another referendum before applying to rejoin the EU is a domestic issue and distinct from the question of the terms on which the UK might rejoin. These terms would be negotiated between the UK and EU once the application had been made.
