Cardiff UCU is concerned to learn that our School of Social Sciences is proposing to effectively replace Postgraduate Researcher Tutors with a Grade 5 fixed-term, part-time and ‘variable hours’ (i.e. precarious) Teaching Associate post. 1/

We are concerned to hear talk that teaching ancient languages may be stopped at Cardiff University, a decision we have heard has been made based on student numbers alone and without consultation. We will support any of our members detrimentally affected by this apparent decision.

A disappointing outcome for many gig economy workers but it's important to remember that it is not the law that defines what a union is but the workers themselves. Unions have been winning disputes for couriers through direct action, and grassroots organising, not in the courts.
