Thread on the main findings and implications from our @EPAIreland funded SAPPHIRE project. 1. Small towns in Ireland experience extreme #airpollution in winter due to residential burning of peat, wood and coal. Exposure to this pollution has a huge impact on #publichealth

Purple Air alert in Ennis. Air Quality has been very poor in Ennis, Co. Clare (10 on a scale of 1 to 10) and poor in Tralee, Co. Kerry (8 on the scale).
At 15:00 03/01/2025 the Air Quality Index for Health (AQIH) summary: Good in Cork city, Dublin, Leinster, Ulster; Fair in Connaught; Very Poor in at least one station in Munster: View AQIH Map:

The levels are so high that the air quality index for health has been at the worst score possible for the last 48 hours! This is a recurring issue. Action is urgently needed to protect public health.

The last two nights have seen very high and unhealthy levels of #Airpollution in many towns across Ireland. Letterkenny was the worst hit with massive spikes in PM2.5 and sulfur dioxide (SO2) due to the burning of high sulfur fuels (e.g. smoky coal).

This is a great article on the benefits of low cost sensor networks for assessing and managing air pollution. Delighted that the Cork City network we helped set up with @corkcitycouncil is used as a good example of mapping urban air quality.
π From Ulaanbaatar to Buenos Aires to Cork City, low-cost air quality sensor (LCS) networks have been set up to support targeted #airpollution interventions. How are these compact devices helping local communities with #airquality management? β‘οΈ https://t.co/pWnGrnowaP

We deployed the Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor in Enniscorthy for @EPAIreland #TownAir. First-week data is already in! Together with filter analyses, our @Mace_Head team and @CRAClabUCC will investigate aerosol composition, sources, and #AirQuality health impacts.

It's #WorldOzoneDay and time to celebrate the huge impact that the Montreal Protocol has had on slowing down depletion of the ozone layer The Montreal Protocol is a scientific success story for inspiring similar global action on climate change.
On 16 September, #WorldOzoneDay, we celebrate the adoption of the #MontrealProtocol in 1987, and its achievements since then. It is a triumph of global cooperation and multilateralism resulting in ongoing environmental protection and future #ClimateAction πΏ

Our lab was very busy this summer as we hosted researchers from several European countries at our atmospheric simulation chamber facility, through the @atmo_access project. Dr Williams Esteve and Dr Sophie Tomaz, from @INRSfrance, conducted novel experiments on surface coatings.

A new way to visualise #airpollution shows the global inequality in what we breathe but also the dramatic improvement that can come about when governments act. By me for @guardian on the Air Quality Stripes by @jimmcquaid & @KJPringle h/t @ed_hawkins
