Ministers have been aware that eyecare companies were using financial incentives to win referrals for NHS patients. What does the law covering fraud and bribery say about these issues? Read our latest blog by two leading financial crime experts here.

Five private companies were paid £536m by the NHS for outsourced eye care in 23/24. Of the £536m, £68m went to private equity debts and a whopping 32% - £169m - in profit. A clear case study in how NHS privatisation leaks money away from care. Report:

Why is the NHS outsourcing diagnostics to overseas owned private companies? The NHS trains and employs the staff doing the work and has the financial resources to buy all the equipment if it chose to. The market in diagnostics for private companies is now worth £10.7 billion.

Very good to see The Telegraph highlighting our 2019 report into the profits leaking out of the care home sector to private equity investors. For our 2019 report visit here: https://t.co/5BMqCKqa7J

Had the government capped the £169 Million in profits generated by just 5 eye care companies the 42 NHS ICBs would not be in deficit, but would be running a surplus. Its not correct to say the NHS is "maxed" out when Ministers and NHSE bosses knew of this waste of money.

Conflicted interests at the heart of outsourced NHS eyecare: 113 mainly NHS eye care doctors own shares or equipment in the private clinics providing NHS services. 50 of them generated £18m in dividends in 4 years. There are no rules to prevent this. https://t.co/hnYuDuaG3D

The Sunday Times has revealed that private companies providing NHS eye care are being investigated by the NHS Counter Fraud Authority. We warned of this risk back in 2013 in our very first report. https://t.co/KfeOOhPmtg

‘Further, faster’ @wesstreeting @UKLabour cutting NHS services whilst outsourcing to Private Providers There are better options
NHS hospitals cutting services as part of a "financial reset". Meanwhile private companies are being allowed to generate profit margins of 50% from providing eye care. The NHS could have saved £122m if it had capped the profits of just 5 companies. https://t.co/8oQG7w941l

£620 million - the net debt of 5 eye care companies. £68 million - the amount of NHS money which is going to pay interest on this high cost debt in just one year. For nothing in return. No benefits to patients. No additional healthcare. To find out more

In just one year £18 million of the money paid out to private eye care companies by NHS Midlands went to pay interest on private equity debt. The NHS got nothing in return. For more info on how much your local NHS area is paying out visit our website here: https://t.co/8oQG7w941l

Our friends at the @CHPIthinktank have developed a handy tool to explore how much profit is leaking out in your local NHS area just in relation to eye care privatisation so that pressure can then be brought to bear on local councillors/ local NHS ICBs. 👇 https://t.co/4Fa2YHDiTT

Staggering profiteering from the 5 main private companies providing cataract removals to the NHS. £169 million in 2023-24 alone. A profit margin of 32%. This is taxpayers' money being squandered on vast private payouts. Efficiency, @wesstreeting?

If there was no profit leakage from the contracts with NHS private eye care companies, NHS ICBs collectively would move from a £109m deficit to a £60m surplus. To find out more about the impact of this on your local NHS visit our new website.
