The backlash reshaped California’s political landscape and ignited a new generation of activists, leading to the creation of California Immigrant Policy Center just a couple of years later.

Legal challenges prevented most of the measure from going into effect, but it had long lasting effects.

On this day in 1994, voters in California passed Proposition 187, one of the country’s most anti-immigrant laws. It prohibited undocumented immigrants from receiving public K-12 education, non-emergency public health care and other public services.
