perennial grasses can live 500 years and they pump carbon into the soil to feed soil microbes. They co-evolved with large herds of grazing animals which help cycle their biomass (with the help of dung beetles) and with proper planning, cows can do that same work...

It’s weird to think that if we didn’t waste food we would need half the agricultural land. And if we had it as gardens we would need a 15th. Or if we did both we would only need a 30th of the area. Then imagine if we did it in layers food trees above food plants below.

Salmon are necessary in the northwest to bring ocean phosphorus and nitrogen to forests with huge differences in carbon capture. They are one of the few inputs into the food-web. This is an ecological disaster.

This is why perrenial grasses are the fastest way we have to sequester carbon in. They develop deeper and deeper roots, especially in presence of well-timed grazing then continue to pump the soil w sugar, protein, carbs (all carbon) to feed the organizers that are mining nutrient

there really is only one system that can handle & respond to this and that is coastal temperate rainforests. They hold onto soil, collect moisture & rain (on the surface of their canopy, in their trunks & in the soil. They are now almost completely cut down. Time to get planting1

Hey 13k folks who follow this account. It’s time to garden. It doesn’t have to be your own yard. Find friends, churches, schools etc. plant things that are low maintainemce. Get food in the ground when it makes sense for your region. Let’s try to feed 10-100 people each. Or more.

This is a pretty disgusting non solution. Grazing instead of depending on nitrogen-fertilizer grain will go far. Adding a little charcoal to their diet as well. Adding more suffering is NOT the way.

Fire in the northwest is complex. It’s important to realize that fire is not inherently bad here: the ecosystem is adapted to it in facts wants it. There will be amazing renewal in most of the places that burn. The real problem is in patch size and fire frequency.

a reminder that there is a boycott on cashews going on rn. The crop produces a compound related to poison ivy and requires a person with a little knife to cut a hardshell off the nut. it's often slave labor or nearly slave labor

So many of us only think of deserts as baron but those are largely eroded damaged landscapes. The cactus In these photos need those shrubs to provide shade for germination and to hold moisture in. So beautiful to see a healthy landscape

When looking at disasters happening around the world remember that climate change accelerates and increases them but that they are often still the result of years of environmental degradation. There is ample room for a lot of repair that is directly about actions on land.
