On this day in 1869, the Saxby Gale hit New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. A category 2 hurricane with winds of 165 km/h, it produced a two-metre storm surge that tossed ships in harbours. It killed at least 37 people and destroyed parts of the Windsor and Annapolis Railway.

On this day in 1795, Alexander Keith was born. He was the mayor of Halifax from 1843 to 1844 and 1852 to 1853. He founded Alexander Keith's Brewery and served with the Legislative Council of Nova Scotia from 1843 to his death in 1873.
