If someone can conceive of an AI use case, are we all obliged to try to make it work? . Have we sleepwalked into some kind of can-do engineering mindset when what we really need is to do a better job of simply saying NOPE?. Seems like we never say nope? And that can’t be right.

Our statistical community is superb. World class. We must have their backs right now because we all need trustworthy data.

Comm. McEntarfer likely knew she was at risk once these numbers were released, but she did it anyhow. Good that she forced Trump to fire her, rather than acquiescing or stepping down. The stats community is strong & principled. Hold tight folks. Be outraged but do not give up.

I've worked closely with Erika. I know of no economist who is more data-focused & devoted to truth in statistics. She never shied from speaking truth to power when the data were disappointing. Nothing would be worse for US credibility than political meddling in our economic data.

When the govt expresses its reasons for changing regulations — and let me be clear that this is bedrock administrative law — we expect the agency to be giving its own, actual reasons. So asking a computer to draft those isn’t gonna work, or at least I’d argue that it shouldn’t.

I’ve got a paper on whether the govt can lawfully outsource its reasoning to AI for rulemaking. TL;DR nope!. I argue that when the govt has a duty to reason (as it does in rulemaking) that duty cannot be fulfilled by someone/thing outside of govt.

If you know me you know that I’m not a hot take factory. I’d rather do anything else. This risk is worth it. This 🧵 is why ALL senators (R&D) should oppose Russ Vought’s confirmation. If confirmed, V will (continue to) take an anti-democratic approach to our federal dollars.

Most people also wouldn’t tolerate this in their own life. If someone you made a deal with reneged, I doubt you’d keep making deals with them. This is the impoundments problem, but on the scale of the entire country and the world.

Even if you think that’s ok if Trump is President, would you want someone from the other party to be able to do that, too? Probably not.

That’s Congress’ power of the purse working against the President’s own powers; checks & balances. When they come to a deal it’s bc WE (the voters) sent them there to make a deal. But when a president renegs on that deal he disregards our power & takes it all for himself.

Impoundments are an example of how Trump’s second term is starting off in an undemocratic way. Let me see if I can explain. When Congress comes to a deal with the president on how to spend federal $, they are both doing so on behalf of the voters who sent them to DC.
