Have you ever wondered if other animals get cancer? Scientists at @ASU were curious about why whales, animals that have more cells than us & longer lifetimes, don’t get cancer more often. So, they analyzed whale genomes. Learn more: https://t.co/0RKeFsNLrw @evilsmaug @CCSPtown

Happy Deep-sea Day. This is my new favourite coral. We found it during our last expedition in Costa Rican waters. Thanks to National Geographic @SchmidtOcean and @4DOceansLab for the support. It took a massive effort and preparation, but it was worth it. https://t.co/IM1JtriJvA

A view of Tropical Storm #Philippe this morning via @NOAA's #GOESEast satellite shows the system to the east of the northern Leeward Islands. The storm is expected to drift for the next few days, and there are currently no coastal watches or warnings in effect. Stay updated:

Hammer-time! I love finding amazing cleared and stained specimens in the lab. This is an embryonic Bonnethead Shark (Sphyrna tiburo) - prepared by Steven Byrum. This is a small hammerhead species with the smallest cephalofoil or "hammer" head, and it is beautiful! 🔨🦈

Bright red and about five inches long, red swamp crayfish look like mini lobsters. But they’re an invasive species, and scientists want them gone.

Fun fact: seals can sleep underwater up to 30 minutes. No worries, no responsibilities, just pure bliss at the bottom of the ocean.

Noctiluca scintillans is blooming again. This buoyant dinoflagellate floats on the sea surface above the zooplankton swimming below. It has a motile tentacle that it uses to catch its food, the latter can be seen as coloured inclusions in its cell. @zeiss_micro

Did you know that "sand" refers to the size of the grains? Sand varies from site to site, each telling a story of the area's geologyand the marine life that lives there. In the #Chesapeake Bay, #sand might include fine pieces of clam and #oyster shell.
