My 2 year old calls a lunchbox a “snack backpack” and I love it.

I’m currently both planning a Disney trip and reading Spare by Prince Henry. Last night I had a dream that one of the rides broke down and Princess Diana broke the news. I was disappointed, but the princess was so kind and sympathetic that I woke up crying. It was weird.

That said, I’ll probably see Oppenheimer. Just at home, where I can pause the movie occasionally to complain about the complete waste of hiring such fantastic actresses as Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh to stand around and look pretty and vulnerable for three hours.

I’ve generally enjoyed Christopher Nolan’s films, and I jive with his style of both storytelling and filmmaking. But I’ve got to say, after seeing Elizabeth Debicki speak all of, what, 5 lines in Tenet, I just can’t unsee the way women are treated in his stories.

Even Interstellar features Anne Hathaway as the woman who almost messes up the whole mission because “feelings” and Jessica Chastain as the daughter who is both motivation for the man and also the character who just can’t figure out how to solve the problem without his help.

But it’s really everywhere. Momento? Classic example of fridging. Inception? Marion Cotillard is the motivation and Elliot Page (pre-transition) is the clueless new hire that Leo D. can explain everything to.

Sometimes you can blame it on the source material. Batman is what it is. And Dunkirk’s lack of women boils down to the place and time of that movie’s setting.

He consistently hires these amazing, powerhouse actresses, then uses them as either motivation for the male main character or as the “fresh eyes” so that the male main character has someone to explain everything to for the benefit of the audience.

I know everyone is excited about Oppenheimer and I’m probably in the minority, but after watching Tenet, I just can’t unsee how poorly Christopher Nolan treats women in his movies.

My kid’s sixth grade class just performed an abbreviated version of Macbeth. They did a curtain call to the song “We’re all in this together” from High School Musical. I’m starting to question their grasp of the material.
