The Books Save Lives grant will supply diverse titles specifically requested by winning educators, circumventing the arduous review process to ensure the books go where they are most needed — directly into the hands of students.

Selected schools are located in states with soaring numbers of book bans. Recent restrictive laws now require extensive and time-consuming vetting of new titles, that make it harder for educators and librarians to shelve inclusive books.

WNDB is proud to announce the second round of our Books Save Lives Grant winners — ten schools and organizations from across the country. Grantees are located in battleground states where pervasive book bans are quickly expanding, will receive up to $5,000 in diverse titles.

Why now? According to PEN America, during the 2023-2024 school year, 29% of all banned titles included LGBTQ+ characters, people, or themes. Of the banned titles with LGBTQ+ characters or people, 28% specifically featured trans and/or genderqueer characters.
