Entirely coincidental, of course, that the Minister of Transport who oversaw all this, Ernest Marples, owned one of the largest road building companies in Britain at the time (he later fled the country and resided in Monaco due to tax fraud).
Beeching was one of the unsung heroes of modern Britain. The railway network required massive government subsidies while it was clear trends in almost of all the country were towards travel by car. He made the correct decision and saved billions.
