Fun story: when my first games biz employer were working on Carmageddon: TDR 2000 they put a horse into the game that you could run over and which died in animated agony. Then the phone rings and the president of SCI calls an all hands meeting to scream at them. /1.

This is the way! Better to get a bunch of negative reviews if that means a bunch of people also played and loved it. Bland, middle of the road entertainment is the worst.
On Dragon's Dogma 2: "I made the game not like a Nintendo one to be liked by everyone, but for a certain audience, so it’s normal if some people outside that target audience don’t like it. However, people who enjoyed the game loved it, appreciated the work. I’m very proud of it.

The new Superman flick was fun, had some strong moments, the casting was great and everyone was committed, but it needed a half hour of fat cut out of it. But more importantly it needed to trust its characters could show their humanity instead of having them literally say it.
