Detail obsessed Illustrator & author. Likes wildlife and picking up heavy things, sometimes for hours at a time. Will exchange shiny trinkets for artwork.
HIDDEN PLANET IS CLOSING DOWN
I’ve done everything to keep afloat but I’ve reached a point of no return & its now an exercise is saving what can be saved to carry on in another form
Huge sale online (link in bio) & in store until May 1st
Sorry everyone we tried
#SmallBusiness
These two are hands down the most detailed & time consuming illustrations I've done...
The Walrus drawn in 2019 for my book Waterworld is the reason it took me until 2023 to draw an elephant as it damn near killed me & I knew that drawing an elephant would be worse 🤣
#Drawing
Last night's flood destroyed most of my stock & we need to start again almost from scratch so if you have been toying with the idea of getting something from me, we could really do with your orders right now.
We'll even give you 25% off to say thankyou because everyone knows
The eater of bone
The Lammergeier / Ossifrage has got to be a strong contender for the world’s most metal bird
I’m happy with how she’s come out but I’ve no doubt I’ll revisit her & draw some more at some point. For now though it’s on to the next one (a sloth)
#ArtistOnTwitter
Now, as everyone knows I’m very shy & humble so this doesn’t come naturally to me but
#MyBrag
is that I’ve been told I’m somewhat skilled at drawing animals.
Now I would never be so bold as to say so myself of course but it’s been said…
I’m Ben & I draw wildlife.
After somewhere north of 500 hours I think I might be finished with this big Bull Walrus.
Going to take a few hours to go home & work out & then I’ll come back & take another look at him with fresh eyes before I tinker with the clouds some more.

One of my favourite

to date & certainly my favourite bird.
I've included the concept sketch & a closeup to prove it is actually a drawing, it's from my most recent book 'Weird & Wonderful' which just came out in the US with
@tilburyhouse
I wanted to re share one of my favourite illustrations as I love it but feel like it gets a bit overlooked.
The Knysna Loerie is a beautiful bird from South Africa & for me is equally as beautiful as more well known colourful birds like parrots, hummingbirds, quetzals & so on.
GIVEAWAY TIME!
We accidentally trimmed this little Puffin print slightly too small so we’re giving it away.
To get entered into our draw just follow these steps.

The winner will be chosen & notified on monday.

why was I not informed?
I’m Ben & I draw wildlife but if I was given free reign to only draw one kind it’d almost certainly be birds.
These two are hands down the most detailed & time consuming illustrations I've done...

again.
My name’s Ben, I’m a natural history illustrator and moderately strong strongman.
These few illustrations are from my upcoming book Water World (4th February)
Right folks, it’s GIVEAWAY TIME.
One of my clouded leopard prints was damaged in the post & returned to us but it’ll still look lovely framed so we’re going to give it away.
Comment, share & tag someone else, we’ll choose someone on Friday & send them the print.
Good luck

We're about 48 hours from the end of our Crowdfunder so to help get it across the line, I'm going to put up for sale some brand new originals.
Starting with this original Eurasian Starling illustration.

Ok after about 200 hours I thought I was finally finished with my Polar Bear illustration...
But looking at him now I think he’s a bit unbalanced and I need to draw more of his neck 😭 that’ll be at least another full day.

I absolutely love having the shop / studio open to the public but definitely not loving all the anti maskers floating about.
You are of course totally correct, I can't make you wear one but I can and will make you leave, via the door or the window... your choice.
Today's

is the Clouded Leopard cover illustration from my upcoming

"Deadly & Dangerous" which I'm reliably informed is available now for preorder from all the usual places...
As it’s
#WorldWhaleDay
I thought I’d share the whales I drew for my last
@ladybirdbooks
book Water World
The 40 or so species of whale are as amazing as they are varied but of the 13 ‘Great Whales’ 6 are listed as endangered or vulnerable as are many of the smaller species.
I spend a lot of time drawing all manner of animals… big, beautiful ones, Small weird ones, it’s all good. I’m particularly fond of fur & feathers though.
#AnimalArtistsUnite
I love cats, I grew up on a farm with cats & they killed EVERYTHING, so now my cat is indoor unless he's on a leash.
The replies to this are baffling
"It's nature" yeh no, we own over 10 million + cats in the UK, that's far predators than our beleaguered wildlife can support.
🐈🔒To save Britain’s birds, it's time to lock your cat indoors.
As our feathered friends start to disappear, some are starting to question the true scale of the damage inflicted by their feline foes

I’ve got a few new followers over the last couple of days so I thought I’d reintroduce myself.
So hi, my name is Ben & I’m a detail obsessed Natural History illustrator & writer and here’s a little of what I do.
I'm Ben, I'm a Natural History illustrator & Writer based in London.
The following images are from my upcoming book 'Water World' (like the film but with slightly less Kevin Costner in it)
These are my first forays into underwater art & I think I'm hooked
#GetYourArtUnderwater
That’s my latest

finished for now…
I’ll probably revisit it and play around a little more, particularly around the tail but for now it’s on to the next one.
@ladybirdbooks
And that’s my Clouded Leopard finished.
I can’t get enough of these beautiful cats, this is the 3rd I’ve drawn and I know I’ll do another one.
Last couple of bits to do and the artwork for Deadly & Dangerous is done.

1) this is terrible.
2) if you’re going to spend money on something like this, maybe give it to an up & coming artist from the capital, y’know one of the ones who’s had a properly terrible last 18 months or so rather than one who’s already rich.
3) This is really terrible.
Brilliant work from David Hockney in Piccadilly—the first of a series of major art projects we’ve commissioned as part of our brand new
#LetsDoLondon
campaign. Lots more to come very soon!
#DavidHockney
All done, very, very pleased with this one.
I still can’t say exactly what I’m up to but I think I’m starting to match what I produced for waterworld last year 👌
An African wild dog has been on my to do list forever, I think I’ve done it justice.

With all of these sometimes unfamiliar species I try to find poses that connect the animal to something people are more familiar with to help them make a connection with it.
Anyone with a

knows this pose.
This is my father.
He doesn’t particularly like people (like father like son) but he has apparently over the course of the last year formed a friendship with this wild pheasant.
That’s it, that’s the tweet.
I’m delighted with how the Matriarch has come out!
Smarter than chimps & better hunters than lions, Hyena don’t deserve their reputation and it’s about time we gave these charismatic animals the respect they deserve.

@ladybirdbooks
book is available to preorder!
You can do this at all of the usual places (do ask your local indie, they can do this as well) and I'm absolutely over the moon with the cover... I do love me a Clouded Leopard!
I was feeling a bit bleak today but then I received the most wonderful message today from a brilliant 6 year old lad in Australia named Elliot who, inspired by Hidden Planet has knocked out an astonishing 20 illustrations in the last week...
In a little under a month my 2nd book,
#hiddenplanet
comes out with
@ladybirdbooks
& I am very excited about it!
You can preorder it from the usual places online OR go into your local bookstore & preorder it from them!!
Ok, much happier with this, I think he needed that extra weight at the back of the neck to help convey his size & power.
The whole thing feels a lot more balanced to me now, swipe to see the first version.
Done & on to the next one!

Here's a little thread of some of the incredible creatures that we share this little blue rock with and that I've been fortunate enough to illustrate.
Great White Shark - Carcharodon carcharias
Today, after over a year of discussions, writing & drawing I got to hold my first book in my hands for the first time & I love it... I mean I’m basically dead inside and even I’m smiling.
@saramegan
Agh I can relate so hard.
Them: So you write & illustrate books
Me: Yes
Them: I’ve not heard of you, anything I’d have heard of?
Me: I’ve no idea mate but if it helps, I’ve not heard of you either.
Maybe this is why I don’t get invited back to things? 🤷♂️
It’s
#PortfolioDay
you say?
Well, I’m Ben and I write & illustrate natural history books and for some reason, most of my recent drawings have contained a LOT of black, white & orange.
Needed a quick break from my Polar Bear so finished up this Striped Marlin that’s been sat on the back burner for a while...
Bit early for
#SundayFishSketch
but I’ll be back in the Bear by then.
Inching along with my Polar Bear illustration... I think I might need my eyes tested 😐 but overall happy with how he’s coming together.

I thought for day 6 of my
#ArtAdventCalendar
I'd go with this Spotted Hyena (also from my upcoming
@ladybirdbooks
book Deadly & Dangerous)
I'm excited for people to read about them in the new book as they're beautiful & charismatic & don't deserve their reputation.
