At a time when mental health policies nationwide are moving in a more humane direction, today’s announcement by the Mayor raises major concerns. My statement:

.@NYCLU on @NYCMayor involuntarily committing those with mental illness who can’t take care of themselves “The Mayor’s attempt to police away homelessness… is a page from the failed Giuliani playbook. With no real plan for housing, services, or supports...”

The Mayor’s involuntary removals plan released today is a throwback to the widespread involuntary hospitalization of the ’80s & ’90s. Here’s our response from BMC Executive Director @AnthoninePierre:

If the mayor, who himself joined in painting a “Black Lives Matter” sign outside of Trump Tower, wants these words to be more than a slogan, he needs to finally make the necessary investments in the futures of Black communities in this third pandemic year.

We are right here, calling for funding to end the structural violence that is at the root of gun violence, like lack of health and mental health services, unemployment and homelessness.

Over the past few weeks, Mayor Adams has been brazenly asking where “Black Lives Matter” activists are when gun violence is happening in our communities.
