Watched the #TopChef2025 finale? What an awesome depiction of diversity as a treasure and identity as a source of pride. All of it makes the American potluck more delicious. This is what #DEI should be. More in my OpEd for @Philanthropy

The long-running show offers lessons on how to reframe diversity initiatives so they unite rather than divide.

My friend and @interfaithusa colleague @theRevAdam on how hard, and important, it is to achieve unum. It’s the difference between coexistence and chaos. In @Deseret

Invoking unity is a bold act. It takes guts to say, “We still belong to each other,” especially when everything around us screams otherwise.

@Philanthropy @EbooPatel gets it pretty right - again. The keys to his op-ed are: 1) participation is voluntary, not compelled; and 2) diversity ion Top Chef is framed in an inherently meritocratic

Smart smart piece @JohnInazu . Love that you quoted: “As scholars and educational officers, they should remember that the public may judge their profession and their institution by their utterances. Hence they … should show respect for the opinions of others …”
Colleges and universities have shown little introspection as to how those of us in higher education might be part of the problem. Perhaps we are contributorily negligent to creating the political culture that makes these vicious attacks possible.

I love that the metaphor of university as gym is getting around. @VanJones68 used it @UChiPolitics in 2020, and more recently @interfaithusa conference in March. May it spread.

Great video from @arthurbrooks , using @VanJones68 metaphor that the university should be like a gym where we build our intellectual muscles for warmhearted conversation between people of diverse identities and divergent ideologies:

When students aren’t challenged intellectually, they become weaker and less able to engage with different perspectives. That weakness fuels polarization and anxiety. A university should be like a...

Excellent @WSJ OpEd by @mroth78 - education means people from a variety of identities collectively discussing a diversity of perspectives and constantly seeking better explanatory frameworks. It does not mean ideological auditors on campus.

Left-wing orthodoxy has stifled campus debate, but replacing it with right-wing litmus tests wouldn’t be an improvement, writes university president Michael S. Roth.
