Co-founder & CTO @multifactorCOM. Applying the rigor of mathematics to build provably secure systems. PhD mathematics, Rust engineer, and endurance athlete.

My path has always been about building bridges between worlds—from mathematical proofs to production code. In 2022, I saw a game-changing idea that planted the seed for this entire journey. Now, I'm taking my biggest leap yet as Co-Founder & CTO of @MultifactorCOM. I wrote the
Colin Roberts, Co-Founder and CTO, shares his journey from pure mathematics to crypto-focused startups and now Multifactor, explaining why he's excited about the future of the company:

“Everyone knows” what an autoencoder is… but there's an important complementary picture missing from most introductory material. In short: we emphasize how autoencoders are implemented—but not always what they represent (and some of the implications of that representation).🧵

Good fkn vibes 🏃♀️ I was not hype for this run. I’m in peak training for my 50k, hitting the highest volume weeks I have in my entire life, and my legs are so cooked. But it ended up being an absolute blast.

When will they learn that Ph.D. mathematicians also can't do simple math questions or count reliably?
While it’s true one can elicit poor performance on basic math question from frontier models like GPT-5, IMO this kind of thing (in NYTimes) is likely to mislead readers about their math capabilities.

🍂Fall is coming in the Colorado Rockies 🍂 This photo was actually taken back on Aug 23, which is surprisingly soon for the aspen to start turning. The early change this year is driven by a drier than normal summer. (1/2)

Building deliberately means you obsess over the foundation so you can move with speed and confidence later. It's really just about building that proper base. Don't obsess with a mantra unless you know it makes sense for what you're working on.

The "move fast and break things" is pretty overblown in my opinion. Why not "move deliberately and prove things"? For example, when you're building security or cryptography, it's insanely irresponsible. You're not breaking simple features; you're making a ticking time bomb!

One of the things that I love about running is it trains mental fortitude that carries over into all aspects of my life. If I can convince myself to keep running when my legs and brain are begging me to stop, I can power myself through anything.

The goal isn't to find one perfect path, but to build a life with a rich space of harmonic solutions. A robust global system like this ensures that wherever you step locally, you're still on solid ground. Who said math was useless? It is literally the guide posts for life!

Even more powerfully, the structure of your harmonic solutions is an invariant. It's robust against local deformations. Making a big leap like a career change, requires a fundamental change to the topology of your life. This unlocks a completely new set of optimizers. 8/9

This is where the freedom from short-scale anxiety comes in. A small local perturbation doesn't throw you off course. It just smoothly shifts you to another nearby path that is still globally optimal. You're free from micro-management because the macro system is robust. 7/9

I talked about these non-negotiables recently: https://t.co/oeSZXzOLvd 6/9
Been thinking about the systems I run my life on. Not one offs or other garbage, just the simple, non-negotiable things I do every day that have had compounding returns for years that I think will work for anyone. Here's the list:

These harmonic solutions are literally the maximally efficient states. Your non-negotiable systems define the global structure of the "manifold" of your life. This structure is what creates the family of harmonics available. You can shape it to make this family richer. 5/9
